I've got a deep sounding knocking noise coming from somewhere under the car when driving on rough surfaces of the road. I thought it might be the exhaust or the metal heat shield (I had a similar noise on my modern car and that was the problem) but have now ruled them out. I also checked the gearstick carrier and the cotton reel mounts look new and there was very little movement. Someone suggested a worn steering rack bush on the passenger side so I checked this and there was a bit of play so I replaced the rack with a reconditioned one but no change. I've checked the front ball joints and there's no play plus my Dad had them replaced, together with the front tie rod bushes, a few years ago and it hadn't had much use since. I can't see anything else loose underneath and I've had a few people try and identify where it's coming from but it's not obvious. It doesn't always happen when hit any thing uneven in the road and quite often starts on what seems to be a smooth road. I've had a garage have a look and they can't find anything. Has anyone any other suggestions as to what else I should check. Thanks

The usual source of unwanted noises in my car was children...
It sounds like you've been through the obvious, so as an off the wall suggestion might be the radiator moving if the bushes have failed. Another could be displacers fitted without the rubber ring. If the system pressure is low the barrels could move. A bizarre one some years ago was a front displacer rod not seated and would ride against the cast suspension housing. That made some very strange noises and was a s@d to find.
Otherwise, perhaps a loose major component? Servo not fully bolted down would probably be loud for instance.
So many things to go through...
Chris.

Has the steering rack sufficient oil? if not, it could make a knocking noise. Peter

Hi There,
If yours is a Mk 1 Crab my guess would be worn rear radius arm taper roller bearings. If not a Mk 1 it could be collapsing slipflex bearings.
This problem is best diagnosed with the suspension de-pressurised to take the load off the bearing that seems to be the source of the noise.
Good luck, Tony.

Thanks for the replies, I'll check the suggestions. It's a MK3 by the way.

Well I've found where the noise was coming from. I had discounted the steering rack as I had replaced it with a "refurbished" one that my father had already bought a few years ago to replace the worn bush in the rack on the car but he hadn't fitted it due to illness. When I inherited the car I replaced it before driving the car back to mine. It looked the part as it was freshly painted, had new gaiters on it and had a label on it saying it was refurbished. When I stripped the rack down to replace the bush the oil was black and contained lots pieces from the disintegrated bush so obviously hadn't been reconditioned. I don't know where he got it from unfortunately. I suppose I should have checked it before fitting it but I assumed it would be fine. Lesson learned.

I make an uprated rack bush, available through LOCI or drop me a PM to discuss.
Chris.

Thanks, but I bought one off you for the rack that I took off a year or so ago and I also found one in amongst my Dad's spares. I've refitted the original rack with one of the new bushes and will replace the bush in the other rack later in the week.
