Hi yall,
Today I set about replacing the missing rear rebound buffers on my MK1. I had to remove the rear bumper and fuel tank to access the nearside buffer bracket. This was repaired in the past but whoever did that didn't drill the bolt holes for the mounting plate, so the access is for a drill. Tony Wood found a couple of buffers which are a very early type with two mounting bolts each. So,I've got my work cut out for this job.
More of a concern is the fuel tank. The rear flange and corner near the filler neck are very rusty and flaky so I'd like to replace or have the tank repaired properly. I don't want to risk a botched up patch repair. Just now the cost of a new one to be made is GULP! HOW MUCH?? EEEK!
SO, on the off-chance that someone has a half decent un molested tank for sale, please let me know.
Thanks.
Jeff

www.fueltanks.co.ukUsed them to bring mine back from the dead…they may be able to help. Mine was pretty rubbish when I handed it over and their system seems to work, well I never had any subsequent problems. Otherwise as you say it’s a remortgage to get one fabricated or a waiting game. Cheers Andrew

Hi folks, No doubt you've read about my suspension and fuel tank woes.
Well, the new rebound buffers are fitted, and suspension pumped up..Thanks to Tony Wood for digging out a pair of new/old stock ones, and thanks to Chris for offering to make new polyurethane one's. They look great, although the demand will be low I guess, as they are only fitted to early cars.
In the process, the fuel tank had to be removed and that unearthed more pending trouble.
The rearmost flange, where the fuel pump bolts to, is falling to bits, large thick flakes of rust from the tank body dropping off, especially where the filler neck joins the tank. I noticed what appears to be some sealing compound around that joint.
Hmmmm, Whadya do? Finding the boot floor, and underside in remarkably good condition, just requiring a scrape and paint, I decided to replace the tank. I really don't fancy a leaking tank, and Mrs Jeff, said she could smell petrol on occasions.
I spent hours searching for a good tank, but nothing was found..So, as ever, I spoke to Tony Wood. Tony suggested I approach Andy Belfield, of Belfield 4x4 engineering, near Llandrindod Wells, in Wales. Andy is the guy who has the VR6 engined landcrab as seen on you tube. Andy, is jigged up to make new fuel tanks for our cars. It's not going to be cheap but what price safety when it comes to old cars and petrol.
So, on Wednesday, I'm off to Andy's place with my old tank, as the filler neck will be needed. He will make a new tank out of steel plate which might take a few weeks turn around time, depending on his workload.
I'm hoping for great things. I will of course let you know when It's back home.
