Just for the record, a few photos of the carpets that I have removed from the car, so far. They seem to be the original ones:

The padding/insulation is about 15mm thick & seems to be of compressed cocoa-nut fibres or similar. The footwell area has 2 layers, the bottom one being about 10mm thick & being stuck together by some sort of black bitumen or similar.
