I am having a go at fitting an electric thermo fan to OKR. Bit off track to what I should be doing! What I am looking for is a water pump type that fits a B series engine that has a shorter shaft than the standard pump.
I am sure I have seen some information somewhere about the many types of pump some of which bolt on but don't have the same shaft dimensions.
Any information appreciated.
Why I ask is I want to put the fan between the rad and the pump. There is not much in it. The motor I have would fit with another 1/2 inch of room. I can drill a recess in the shafts but a shorter shaft water pump would make it happen.
Thanks Nick

Have you considered fitting the electric fan inside the wheel arch? The Japanese spec classic minis fitted with aircon used this arrangement. Not sure how robust this would be if used on unmade tracks but the couple of cars I've seen here seemed to not have any issues.

Hi David I have but I don't like the idea. I would rather keep it inside. I considered a viscous coupling but the air flow is the wrong way. I also have considered a clutch as with an air con compressor. That is also a bit backwards to be fitted. I remembered where I saw the water pumps. It is MGB's that have different height pumps but the shortest variety is already on this car by the look of it at 83mm. Unless anyone knows of a shorter shaft unit? There is not much in it. I probably need 1/2" for a comfortable fit with the fan motor I have. I want to try to make it not noticeably different. I may use a slimmer brushless motor. I am thinking about making an aluminium fan that looks like the original but attaches to a motor inside instead of the water pump. Not essential work I have to admit but shouldn't upset my knee! There were four common pumps.
1/ Small impellor, short housing. 2/ Small impellor, long housing. 3/ Large impellor, short housing. 4/ Large impellor, long housing.
The first two might be described as "early" pumps - 1500 and 1622 engines; the latter two used on the 1800cc engine. Ours is number 3. There were other ones used on commercials, marine and industrial versions. They all tend to be longer to deal with extra belts and pulleys, also quite rare to find these days.
Other alternative might be to move to a remote electric pump and simply blank the water pump opening off. Davies Craig and Bosch seem to offer various pumps.

I think I have it cracked. I have cut 5mm off the pump and altered the rad brackets to give me about 60mm between the rad and the pump. I slotted the engine back in briefly and still have sufficient engine clearance. The fan and motor are 50mm or so. I have moved to replacing the cam before I continue with the rad. Got issues getting it out! See the OKR thread.
Thanks Chris
