Hi,
Forgive me if some or all of the following has been answered elsewhere, I did search!
Coming from mostly A-Series BMC cars I have a few questions about my imminent time with a Morris 2200, and have no handbook!
The E-6 looks to be gearbox in sump. Do I use the same 20-50 or 20-60 high zinc oils?
I suppose everyone uses Martin Jay, the dizzy doctor, for ignition spares?
Where to source oil filters? Is a spin-on conversion necessary?
Any grease or steering rack oils I need to pump in regularly?

Hi Halkyon, welcome. From memory, I seem to remember using 20/50 in my old Wolseley six. Now, in my 1800, I use miller's oil, developed for older engines. Its expensive but seems fine. Just don't put cheap junk in there. Your best bet for parts, oil filters etc, and pretty much anything else, is Tony Wood, the spares secretary of Landcrab owners club International. You should be able to find his contact details on their we site. The steering rack, if manual uses EP140 gear oil. Not sure if power assisted but I'm sure others will advise.
This is a great site for technical information and most landcrab stuff. There are some very knowledgeable folk on here. Good luck with the E6.

Coming from mostly A-Series BMC cars I have a few questions about my imminent time with a Morris 2200, and have no handbook! AKD7961 is the WM. They pop up regularly on eBay. The E-6 looks to be gearbox in sump. Do I use the same 20-50 or 20-60 high zinc oils? Yup, just like the Mini and the 1100, but bigger. 20W/50 mineral oil is the stuff to use. 6,000 mile service interval, so worth using decent stuff. Unless it's a leaker - keep topping it up with the cheap stuff until the leaks are resolved. I suppose everyone uses Martin Jay, the dizzy doctor, for ignition spares? I certainly do. Stuff that works.... Don't get me started on condensers. Where to source oil filters? Is a spin-on conversion necessary? Cannister oil filter is GFE109, spin-on is GFE149. I'd see how you get on with what's fitted before making changes. "E" series engine parts are a little thin on the ground. Any grease or steering rack oils I need to pump in regularly? Manual rack uses 1/ 3 pint of EP90. P/S rack uses 1/ 3 pint of SAE40 or 20W/40 or 20W/50. Pump needs 2 pints of Type F ATF. As Jeff has said, the first point of contact is Tony Wood. He keeps a quite extraordinary range of spares for our vehicles, which he supplies on a largely non-profit basis. LOCI members do get preferential pricing.... Contact Tony on spareathought[AT]landcrab[DOT]net or on O125335273O. The complete parts listing is available HERE and is useful for identifying parts and understanding just how the various assemblies are constructed and function. Chris.

What is REALLY important with the 2200 engine is to keep the cooling system in perfect order. This means flushing the radiator and block, checking the thermostat and electric fan and sensor and also ensuring other factors such as ignition timing and fuel mixture are set correctly and there are no air leaks on the inlet.
The reason this is so critical with this engine which was developed in Australia by adding 2 extra cylinders to a Maxi 1500 block is that it was required to be as short as possible to fit transversely and this compromised the design of the cylinder wall cooling.
This engine was fitted to the Australian Austin Kimberley and Tasman and some owners there have fitted an additional cooling fan. As it turned out there was no need to make the engine so short as the radiator was moved to the front of the engine, but in the 1970s with a limited budget I imagine modifying an existing engine was the only option.

I would also recommend an oil pressure gauge. The oil pump can become partly clogged, and the oil pressure therefore too low. The warning lamp will not necessarily go on. This will lead to engine failure. (I know from experience). Peter
