Sounds as though you've cracked it! Ideally the ignition switch should be wired to operate a relay that can provide a good quality high current contact and feed the appropriate circuits. I agree there could be a little more than 0.5 volt drop but it's important to keep it to an absolute minimum because of the way the coil charges the relationship with the supply voltage is more exponential than linear. Hopefully the electric fuel pump if it's the SU design wouldn't pull down the reading at all once the float is full and the gauges and warning lights shouldn't take much current. David I would have expected a bit of voltage drop maybe more than 0.5v Due to warning lights, gauges, and possibly fuel pump depending on where it is on its stroke. Anyhoo, for the avoidance of doubt, I pulled the A4 fuse and everything that should be protected by that fuse stayed off, so something is right somewhere..

Just had a look at that. So like mine was. As a belt and braces thing I ran an extra earth cable from the battery earth point and on to various under dash points, heater, radio etc. Used a multi way bullet connector. I know you shouldn’t need to but I feel happier. Also ran one to rear lights whilst I was at it. Scotch lock connectors always seemed a good idea years ago. Not the same as doing it right.

OMG! Just looked at those pic of the dash removed..what a mess. Mines untidy but nothing like that. Did any other cars of the time use the AMP wiring system? I cant think of any. Even the Maxi went back to a conventional lucas type fuse box. Maybe BMC got a good deal for system of looms with plugs and sockets. All very new at the time. Perhaps Lucas backed away from competing of just couldnt cope on top of of all the other production commitments. I really would like to know why ADO17 seems quite unique in the electrics.

I suspect that the AMP fuse box was used as it allowed the plugs to be used to service the engine bay. Perhaps an early attempt at modular wiring - each plug runs one group of electrics. Which was fine in front. I made a new loom for the engine bay in my Austin and it was really quite logical and straightforward. Going backwards however....
I'm told that the only other application for the AMP box was in some kit cars. I have no idea which.
Snoopy's wiring finished up nice and neat, BTW.

It's got a long way to go to match the wiring in the streets of Bangkok hereAt least they don't have to dig up the road to repair it! David Pulling the dashboard - page 17 of SNOOPY'S THREAD is quite revealing. Chris.
