Greetings, Wanna pick the brains trust, has anyone had any experience with alloy cylinder heads. Re commissioning my Mk2 saloon next year, long engine and manual conversion. Is there a preferred brand of head or supplier that anyone has used in the past, I was comparing the cost of doing up a 50 year old cast iron head or invest in a new alloy head. Regards Simmo

I took my cast iron head to Peter Burgess of MGB fame. He refurbished head, new valves and unleaded seats , new springs, polished ports to fast road spec for £385. I reckon that’s a bargain. He did have alloy head for sale, but very pricey. www.peter-burgess.comJust checked his prices - £390 plus VAT for Econotune. Mine was 2 years ago! TONY S

No direct experience - but did seriously consider it when doing mine as, as I'm sure you know they're a lot lighter and disperse heat better. You can either stay with standard carb configuration or there is a crossflow option! Webcon were the ones I looked at but in the end went off the idea as they were a lot of money compared to doing up a cast version - unless I guess you can pick up a good second hand one. As Tony points out with the cast option you're in the hundreds of pounds, with the alloy you start at £1200/£1300 ish for a complete head . Hope this is some help and Happy Christmas! Cheers Andrew

Tony, Andrew thanks for your replies. I’m aware of Peter Burgess and have seen his name mentioned before on this forum. Tony that cylinder head looks the goods, unfortunately I’m in Australia postage would double the cost of reconditioning one of my old cast iron heads.
