I purchased my 18/85 Auto in January this year and among various bits and pieces that came with the car was a folder which to be honest I had forgotten about. On further inspection I found it was full of very useful of interesting facts and documents:-
Original bill of sale from Lane's of Herne Hill, 19th June 1967, £1175 0s 3d including purchase tax, delivery, number plates, safety belts and road tax, colour which is listed as Saxon Grey. The original buyer managed to wangle £92 4s 0d staff discount!
Guarantee certificate for the 'Finest Underbody Coating' in the world from Carseal, and has a lifetime guarantee if you are lucky. It seems to have done its job so far as the MOT tester in September said it is a very solid car.
The first document was 1980 for an MOT and the mileage was given as 13572
First change of ownership came in 2000 and the mileage was 13577
All MOT certificates and tax discs are present from 2000 up until 2010
Change of ownership to myself in January when the mileage was 18552
There was also an original Wolseley 18/85 Handbook, well thumbed, plus a nice lot of photographs when the car was somewhat smarter and I guess from 2000 ish?
I hope these documents back up the claim when i bought it that the car is a two owner with low mileage?

Documented history is a very good thing to have. Old MOT certificates certainly help to verify mileage but if there is a gap this makes it a bit more tricky. Without knowing more, it is very difficult to confirm what happened between 1967 and 1980. Did the car only do 13572 miles or 100,000 more? Did it then only do 5 miles in the next twenty years? It would seem that it did around 5,000 miles until you came to own the car as I imagine the MOT mileages confirm that. The number of owners should be on the V5 /V5C document

Any history is always nice to have. I've got the Passport to Service for the red car, showing the original owner, the selling garage and the servicing garage. Only the first stamp though - after that - nothing! Still, it's a nice little memento.
Chris.

Yes nice to have it's birth certificate and passport but as long as you're happy with the condition of the structure (which it seems you are) I wouldn't worry/put too much importance/reliance on mileages. Cheers Andrew

Thanks Andrew, reassuring words indeed. A worry buying a car at the best of times, I have had to spend a bit on it, a large bit actually........stainless exhaust, new tyres all round and also to have the seats part retrimmed, hopefully that is it for now??

Here's hoping! I tend to view old cars the same as boats and old houses - be prepared to allocate some money each year to the unexpected/ongoing improvements... the plus side is it's not depreciating and they're great to drive. Anyway, you're hooked now and probably on the line for quite a while hopefully! Love the reg btw! My only bit of unsolicited advice is to do what you can to keep the tin worm at bay in the structural areas. I'm going through the process on my car at the mo, cleaning and wire brushing the underside and then will coat with something - just not sure what! Cheers for now. Andrew

Thanks Andrew for your advice, getting the car in the air to get underneath is a problem in itself. Al

"I'm going through the process" in this case means I'm paying someone else to do it and I'm supervising and writing the cheque. It's a lot easier on a two or four post ramp and it's not a job I enjoy doing myself anymore!

Andrew, I love your definition of "I'm going through the process". I can think of dozens of times I could use it. You're not related to a politician are you? David

! I don't mind tinkering with stuff and in days gone by would try and tackle most things but I've come to realise my "skills" (and enjoyment) are more on the project management/research side of things these days!
