I have the dynamo out of my 18/85 at the moment and thought I would check the brushes. My car has P/S and presume the only way to split the pump and dynamo is to drain down and remove the large fitting on the end and then the cover to gain access to the relevant bolt heads? Is it worth all this hassle just to check the brushes or should I just run until the brushes fail? It seems a bit of a work up to me. Thoughts please guys.

Yes, cover off the pump then six bolts to drop the backplate off the dynamo. Watch out for where the drive dog goes when you separate the two. Dynamo needs the end frame taking off to change the brushes.
Not difficult, but a bit time consuming.
