Hi all, I decided to buy a new exhaust system to my MK1 just in case...⁰ It's the earlier single box, straight through system.
The new exhaust has arrived from Phil Jarvis 07768263683. Recommended by Tony Wood, from LOCI.Phil's company made most of the system, part stainless and part aluminiumized mild steel, I couldnt afford a full stainless system, and he just happened to have a new, old stock front pipe in store at the right price.
Tony Wood was able to supply a new manifold clamp set and Phil provided the rubber mounting bobbins.
Now, here is the question. Do you guys use sealing past, such as Gun Gum on that dreadful manifold joint with the split shells??
Many moons ago,I recall that joint being quite prone to blowing and as on many transverse BMC engines.
Why they didnt use a bolted flange such as on the MGB engine is a mystery. No doubt cost. It's a much better arrangement...I think.

There's assembly paste on mine. Friend Ron did it last time and made several observations. 1/ Get the mating surfaces spotless - even if this means removing the manifold. 2/ Get the clamp itself spotless. 3/ Welding the clamp bolts to one half of the outer clamp makes fitting much easier. 4/ Get the alignment right before clamping the pipe to the engine bracket at the bottom. 5/ "Adapt" the bracket to meet the path of the down pipe. Hammer may be required.... At the moment, the joint doesn't blow. Chris.

Same as Chris said. Only thing I did different was fit front pipe first, then offer up rest. That was a complete old new stock from Ray House. Some of the pattern part exhausts used to be an absolute bu##er - happy days.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've got hold of some Holts Firegum as a sealing paste so hopefully when I come to fit the system, a smidge of that will help..
