I'm scratching my head here............1967 Wolseley 18/85, the stalk mounted repeater light works at a reduced voltage, very dim, I can get the lamp bright if I lift one of the little spring loaded brass segments inside the actual selector switch, that said I put the side lights on and there is no repeater lamp at all although the indicators and wing mounted indicator lamps all function correctly. I have ran fine wet and dry paper through the contacts on the indicator arm and cleaned with electrical cleaner. Looking at the wiring diagram I see the feed (light green) to the repeater lamp comes from the lighting switch which looks as if it has an internal resistor and wondered if the switch is the problem? Any help would be appreciated fellow Crabbers.

Can you post a picture of the "little spring loaded brass segments inside the actual selector switch". The w/s manual diagram for the Mk1 cars indicator /headlamp flasher and the flasher unit itself is horrible. It was simplified for Mk11 cars where the stalk indicator light was moved to the instrument panel and the flasher unit had 2 terminals not three. The Mk1 diagram does appear to show a resistor symbol as part of the lighting switch but I'm not sure if this is correct. The only resistors I am aware of (and I stand to be corrected) are those internal to the relay unit that dims the rear brake and indicator bulbs when the cars lights are on (located right hand rear luggage access panel). The stalk indicator lamp is 12v 1.5 watt. It may be worth unplugging the left hand connector below the cowl on the steering column to check the contacts are clean and it also will give you access to the feed for the indicator stalk to make some checks. David, I will do that but I didn't think of the multi-connectors that join the indicator arm to the loom and will check and clean the male/female connectors and of course redo the earthing eyelet before I upload photos. Chalks.

Can someone with a Mk1 crab with the indicator repeater on the stalk please check whether the light dims when the lights are switched on. I can't recall as it's some 45 years since I last owned a Mk1 car. I don't recall it being mentioned anywhere only the dimming of the rear brake and indicators at night. Thanks David Looking at the wiring diagram I see the feed (light green) to the repeater lamp comes from the lighting switch which looks as if it has an internal resistor and wondered if the switch is the problem? Only the brake and rear indicator lights dim when lights are on. I have disconnected the blue box years ago after nearly being hit by a car that didn't notice the indicator light. In Denmark lights have to be on during daytime, so dimming is not a good idea.

Thanks Peter, that's what I thought but in trying to get to the bottom of the dim stalk light that goes off completely when the lights are on, I made the mistake of trying to read the Mk1 w/s wiring diagram. It appears to show the power feed for the stalk bulb going through a resistor which is across two terminals of the light switch. The switch diagram is very unclear, I wish they would use conventional electrical symbols. Why the stalk indicator output from the 3 terminal flashed is routed first to the light switch is another of Lucas' mysterious wiring examples. The blue box only shows up as a relay with no resistors apparent in the diagram, a good idea to remove it for the reasons you mentioned. All sorted, the problem was the very thin red wire which is the earth side of the indicator stalk warning light, although soldered to the black at the switch ( under a tiny eyelet screwed to the white plastic) and then to earth, the joint was dry, re-soldered and all is now operational. I did not know that the rear direction indicators also dimmed with side lights on, just been out to garage in the rain to check and mine dim too, there is so much to learn on an ADO17!

Good news. Maybe worth considering bypassing the dimmer relay for the rear brake and indicator lamps as per Peter's warning. Times and speeds have changed!

I wasn't able to upload any photos as I couldn't get the jpegs small enough to upload, that said all fixed, back together and working.
