For those of you who love doing everything on your crabs except electrics here is a video that shows why your multimeter may give you misleading readings when you are checking power feeds. Ignore the title of the video, that refers to the second half. I suggest you watch from 4 minutes to 14 minutes and ignore references to sophisticated test gear, you only need a bulb and some wire. The bottom line is that the multimeter may read the correct volts even if there is a poor earth or other connection but there is not enough current to operate headlights, the coil, wipers etc. Hope someone finds it useful, video hereDavid

Always have my bulb with wires soldered to it. It’s been in the car for forty years now. Got me out of trouble in 1980 when on the way to Cornwall with caravan and four daughters. Spade connector on starter snapped off and car died. Fixed in no time. Police officer who stopped to help impressed by the use of simple equipment!

The bulb test is excellent for the old classic car wiring. For anyone tempted to try and sort out modern car wiring issues it should only be used for testing power feeds for high current items as per the video. A LED test light should be used for the electronics as even one with a small incandescent bulb can fry the ECU. The multimeter in voltage mode can find poor earths by checking for voltage drops between the earth connector and the battery negative.

Agree your comments. I don’t fiddle with modern cars! cant afford an IM608 either at over £2000. Good video though, makes you think. Common fault on old motorbikes was iffy lights due to wiring harness stretching round the headstock. Would test ok but only a few strands connected. You really found out when you turned left and headlight went out. Tony S
