Hi Guys,
Something strange happened just now with my car, it normally runs fantastic... Mk1 auto.
Was driving along and came to a stop at some lights close to home and noticed that the idle speeds was a touch higher than normal, thought nothing of it as the temp was a fraction higher than normal... just a touch.... at the next set of lights it idle speeds was a touch higher again... so I tried pushing the choke in to no effect.... 1.5kms of winding suburban roads and roundabouts and I arrive home. Stopped and put in reverse (engine revs slightly higher again and a cluck into gear), start up our slightly inclined drive and as I have started, about 90% through my reverse turn, a puff blue smoke came out the exhaust... completed reverse and put into park... no more smoke other than that one puff (it never, ever smokes, engine was rebuilt and have done about 30k Kms only) revs are higher than normal and lifting the bonnet and playing with the accelerator/choke makes no difference... powered it of and let it sit for 5mins.... started again first kick but revs are still high....
I would greatly appreciate any thoughts as the car is my daily commute to work. Somehow my brain is saying to check the oil in the carbie? Am I on the right track with that??
Thanks in advance.

So reading the book I think is says if the carbie oil is low then that will actually lower the revs.... so my next thought is that the piston in the carbie may need a good clean.... this has never been done in the 20years I have owned the car... but I don’t think I have any carbie gaskets so it is a risk I think... wish I was a mechanic

Check the choke and throttle cables again to ensure they are FULLY closing and also haven't jumped out of their supporting brackets on the engine, holding them slightly open. Topping up the oil in the carb dashpot shouldn't reduce the engine idle it shouldn't make any difference but need to be checked regularly. Check for any air leaks in the hoses to the PCV valve, brake servo hose and inlet manifold also ensure the oil filler cap is tight. If the engine is running rich a small air leak will raise the idle speed. Ah!! I am so happy found it and it’s an easy fix as I have a spare... the rubber diaphragm in the pcv valve had a hole in it!! I was always suspicious of this one as it is much thinner than the original one that was in the car. Thanks very much for the replies:)
