Finally tracked down my extreme tappet noise to a cam that is worn out and followers that look like they were shot with buck shot.
My question; current cam is stamped 12H2430; new cam unobtainable here in SA, reprofile is last choice, what MG B1800 cam would be a straight replacement with same or very similar lift and duration? Anyone got part numbers for me please?

Camshafts were as follows: 12H 34 Early MkI. 12H 2345 Late MkI - No fuel pump lobe. 12H 2346 MkII + III - with pump lobe. Superceded to CAM1179. 12H 2746 "S" models. Can't find any reference or application for 12H 2340. 12H 2345/6 both have the same profile: Inlet 5/45 Exhaust 40/10 Cam lift 0.25" Duration 230° I made enquiries with Newman Cams - www.newman-cams.com/ - about 18 months back. No problem making a cam to that specification. Cost then was £170 + VAT, which you wouldn't have to pay, and shipping, which you would. Hope that helps, Chris.

When I was looking for a hotter fast road cam I spoke to the rep at Kent cams. Both Kent and piper both do cams for the b series if you want something with a bit more profile.

I forgot to mention that after market cams may not have the additional lobe for a mechanical fuel pump. Easily rectified with an electric one

If you have any trouble whatsoever, give Clive from Clive's Cams a call or email.... Clive is THE guy when it comes to cams here in Melbourne... he has decades of experience with our engines and can either regrind an existing (if he deems that it is okay) or he can just create your a new cam from his billets.... he re-profiled my cam for me a few weeks ago and it cost me about $90.00 which is pretty darned good. I was going to get a new one but he said my old cam was in great condition and just needed a re-profile to make it all good again. His new cams are also great value... Just have a chat to him about what you want to achieve and how your car is setup (mine was auto with single carbi and standard exhaust) and he will make a cam to suit)... I reckon you could buy a new one from him and have it shipped to you cheaper that getting one from the UK. Highly Highly recommended. www.clivecams.com.au/

Good info, James. Craftsmen who still have knowledge of the cars are priceless. They say that the world is a smaller place these days, but many things still come down to a bit of local knowledge.

I wonder if there is an equivalent of Clive's Cams in the UK?
I see plenty of UK adverts for performance cams from the likes of Piper and Kent etc but not the standard original OEM spec for "non performance" cars.
Downton (and I) actually much preferred the intermediate Mk1 cams 12H 1294 with the 5,45, 51,21 timing for tuning with a single carb (their kits for the later cam 5,45,40,10 used 2 SUs). This seemed to give a better top end performance but had even larger valve clearances (0.018").
I imagine many classic car owners would prefer to keep the original cam specs so I guess someone must be fulfilling this need and hopefully at similar prices to those found by James?
