Ok so I'm looking for some oil for my Austin 1800 I'm in Australia so the temperature isn't cold and I don't have a work shop guide so I cant read that and I have read some of the other forms and they say something about having oil in the carb? if someone could explain why and what to do with that it would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

I would strongly advise trying to get hold of a workshop manual if you can. They are often available on EBAY. Note the Oz versions differ in a number of areas, mainly around the braking components. A link to some guidance on the SU carb here . If you scroll down you will see it covers topping up the oil in the dashpot. This was originally specified as SAE20 but 20w50 seems to work just as well. You need to check this every month or so and top up if necessary. Without the oil you may well experience flat spots on acceleration. David

Also while you have the top off make sure the little breather hole is clear.

I don’t really know but my best guess is that it’s there to vent pressure build up from the piston
