Here is a video that shows how to make a tool from an old spark plug to find top dead centre (TDC). It also demonstrates how a crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) can deteriorate with age resulting in the timing mark being >10 degrees out - this can result in serious engine damage as well as poor performance and economy. Not a crab engine in the video but the same principle applies. TDCDavid

It's also worth marking the crankshaft pulley either side of the rubber insert in line with the timing mark to check whether there is any distortion observed with the timing light with the engine running or as a means of checking for any future distortion.
There are a few references to MGB crankshaft pulleys separating the inner and outer components which on the crab would probably destroy the radiator at a minimum, the pulley is heavy!
