ADO17 all models (heater)
ADO17 all models (intake, pancake filter)
ADO61 all models (heater)
ADO61 all models (intake, pancake filter)
It's possible to get on eBay HEPA filter paper on its own (not built into a filter etc).
The 17/61 have an intake for the heater which is ram assisted at speed but the only protection or filtration of air is a .5cm metal gauze.
The 17 at least also has the *most* bloody annoying air filter can invented by the human race. Often people have got rid and put a foam filtered pancake filter on - but this reduces intake filtration.
Method (heater).
Open bonnet and measure the depth of the intake port for the heater from front to back (add a very small amount extra). Cut the filter paper from the packet to the depth of the port so you end up with a thick strip. Put the paper into the intake port ensuring that the entire port is covered by the paper, trying to ensure that the paper ribbing is as regular as possible. Close the bonnet & test - the airflow doesn't seem to be affected at all by this mod.
Method (intake).
This works on a foam type pancake filter held with metal gauze (similar to the intake gauze mentioned above).
Quick method.
Size and cut a strip of filter so it can fit snugly vertically between the top & bottom pancake plates
Sandwich the filter in between the two, cut to length & secure.
Replace filter & adjust and test.
You may find that the engine is running slightly leaner because of better airflow (definitely will if replacing a OEM filter can).
Not so quick method.
Step 1 as above
Remove filter top & filter from engine.
Unlatch the inside gauze (carefully) and take the filter strip & install inside the foam filter vertically between the filter and the inside gauze and relatch the inside gauze.
Reinstall filter and filter top and test.
The engine may run leaner or differently - adjust accordingly.
The filter paper will not restrict airflow unless it becomes dirty (similar to the standard filter) - this will be obvious using method 1, not so obvious using method 2*. The advantage of this upgrade in both cases & especially for the engine is cleaner air.
The paper I used for this is under this eBay listing number : 371963369080
* very slow hot idle is a clue.
