My landcrab runs like a train, however it's leaking too much oil from the timing and rear main seals. Thus it's time to remove the engine for a reseal. And of course the questions come up with, well while we are here......!
Currently my engine is a stock mk11 with a stage one head , downton extractors, twin SU's.
My question is should I take the opportunity to swap out the cam? Something like a Mgb???
I understand you do not want to get to excited for the auto transmission longevity.
Thanks Lyndon

Hi Lyndon. Welcome aboard. That's a question for David, Tommy or perhaps Andrew. I gather that the MGB mild road cam is a popular choice, but you need to know how to set it all up properly. I don't........ Chris.

I went with Piper Cams and have tried the 285 - great fun but doesn't really get going until about 2,500 rpm and the 270 which I find really good and I'd imagine work well with your setup and the auto. Between 30 and 80 mph it is an absolute hoot .The idle is a tiny bit lumpy in my car but nothing horrendous. Fitted vernier pulley as well so you can time it spot on. www.pipercams.co.uk/Camshafts-Car/Make-BMC/Engine-B-SERIES/I went the whole hog of programmable distributor as well. www.123ignition.nl/product.phtml?id=189Which is expensive but very good once set up properly and I run two curves, one for good fuel and one for not so good. Good luck with whatever you decide...as I'm sure you know though this tuning lark is a slippery slope......

As Andrew has noted the 270 is fun but I think with the auto a stage 1 head and twin SUs that the standard UK MGB (16,56,51,21) maybe the one to go for. It depends what you want. I would be a little cautious trying to get too much power with an old auto-box.
You will need an electric fuel pump unless you can convert the cam as Tommy had done to drive the mechanical pump.

Thanks Dave, my landcrab has already been fitted with an electric fuel so all good there. You are correct, I don't want to blow the auto!

Do you know which camshaft is currently in the car?

I have an auto MK1 sedan and when I had the engine rebuilt years ago by an MGB shop they put in a "Two stages over factory" cam.. whatever that actually means.... the upshot is that it is a bit rough when idling but it actually goes great... it is MUCH better since I put a new electronic ignition and new dizzy from these guys performanceignition.com.au/p/scorcher ... in fact it is like a brand new/improved car since I did that.... anyway, the car LOVES the open road and I can sit on 110kms all day long... it does get hot in traffic even through I have a brand new radiator and an automatic oil cooler fitted... I always wondered if having a lumpy cam made a difference to the temperature... the car also has hardened valve seats and slight larger valves...but is single carbie and standard inlet/exhaust manifolds... and I always run in on 95 octaine..

As far as I'm aware, the engine would still have its original stock cam, its grown the additional goodies over my ownership,
