Hi, should I be able to see the ignition timing teeth and pulley mark - without getting under the car (jacking & stands and removing the front wheel)? Its and Australian model with the sump guard. Last time I had things more dismantled. Paddy

In the UK they changed the timing marks from the bottom to the top of the timing cover if I recall correctly around 1972 with a corresponding change to the position of the notch on the crankshaft pulley. Earlier units with the timing teeth on the bottom of the timing cover necessitated climbing underneath to check the timing. I assume your sump guard is making it difficult to check?
If you do need to remove the sump guard and hopefully someone in Australia can confirm, then I would suggest trying to find a later timing cover and mark the pulley at TDC so it can be checked from above. If you can't find a later cover you could fabricate an indicator to attach to the block at the top of the pulley and then mark the pulley to align TDC. There is a diagram somewhere showing the relationship of the pulley marks when changing timing covers. I will see if I can find it if you have to go this route I think it is on a MGB website.

Hi Dave, I wont need to take the guard off. Might pull the from wheel when I raise it. I was thinking it should be easier than that - and indeed somebody beat me to it (in 1972.) Thanks for the advice and all the best in 2018! Paddy
