Hello Folks, I've oil leaking from my 1800 MK II's engine - no surprise there - but it's not coming from the place that I am used to see it leaking from, the gear change cable mount. This leak is coming from fairly low down on the RHS of the engine (driver's side), where it appears some sort of pin is loose. Here's a picture of the pin taken through the driver's side wheel well. Rear of the vehicle is to the left of the image and the Australian special sump-guard sheet is in darkness below it. I've been through all of my reference and service materials for the engine and can't find any reference to this pin or the hole it is in. It seems odd to have such a loose fitting pin at the base of an engine. It can be pushed upwards freely and when it pops back down it has more oil on it. Does anyone out there know what this pin and hole are for?

Hi cmjl Welcome to the forum. From the photo it looks as though the oil is leaking past the pin at the bottom of the flywheel housing. The pin is meant to be loose to allow any oil that leaks past the rear engine oil seal or gearbox seal (which it shouldn't) to drip out and hopefully not contaminate the clutch plate. The only way it can be cured is to remove the engine and gearbox and replace the seals. However, don't panic before carrying out such major work I would advise the following: If you have not changed the engine oil and filter do so using a 20w50 grade oil (thin or old oil may leak past the seals) Check the crankcase breather system is functioning. If the breather is blocked pressure will build up in the crankcase and blow oil past the seals. A photo of the PCV valve on your car would help - we see them modified, blocked or removed on occasions. Have a look at the article on tuning - you may beed to be logged in to download it. A quick way of checking is to remove the filler cap at check for a vacuum as you rev the engine. Landcrab tuning If the engine has not been run for a long time the seals may have deformed. I have known them to sometimes re-seal after being run for a thousand miles or so if the leak is not too severe. regards David Hello Folks, I've oil leaking from my 1800 MK II's engine - no surprise there - but it's not coming from the place that I am used to see it leaking from, the gear change cable mount. Thanks for the helpful info Dave and the link to your tuning document - both greatly appreciated.
It's only done 400 miles in the last 3 years prioy to me purchasing it, and I've put it through 300 miles in the past 3 weeks. I reckon the oil was probably old and the filter is 3 years old too, even though it has only filtered for 700 miles. I reckon oil change will be #1 on my list of things to do.
I'll see about getting a photo of the PCV valve up for all to see - once I find out what the PCV valve is and where it is located :-) I'm seeing this as a great big learning experience, something I didn't have the time or resources for 30 years ago when I had to sadly bid farewell to my first crab.

Hi. Welcome to the forum The PCV valve is a circular component located on top of the engine between the valve cover and the carburettor

Worth getting a w/s manual if you can find one on Ebay. There are quite a few differences on the Oz Mk11 cars so pereferably a local version.
