Hello Guys, The engine tag is missing on Gromits engine. I was told the engine is the original and on its rebuild it came back from the machine shop without it. The heritage certificate came today BUT the engine number is only four digits Like 3### and thats it. So i need to get a full number so i could order a new one. I know from the minis and 1100's that there was a low compression L and a H for high compression and i thought a transverse designation. I do know the car was made on the 8th of Oct 1968 and went to Canada. Any help getting a number figured out would be appreciated Aaron

Unfortunately the engine number tag is made of aluminium which dissolves in the caustic soda or similar used to clean the engine at machine shops. UK built Mk11 engines were in the format: 18H125H101nnnnnn. (n - serial number) For "S" engines substitute 243 for 125 I am uncertain if there were different formats for your market. Hopefully someone here can confirm and also tell you the serial numbers appropriate for the date of manufacture. Regards David Hello Guys, The engine tag is missing on Gromits engine. Thanks David, I found a list of cars that states the 70 on mk2's were 12H but lists a October 68 as a 12C. mgaguru.com/mgtech/engine/be100.htm So now not sure where the dashes and spaces go but drawing it out it looks like, 18C-125-H space 1013###

Have a look in section one of the parts listings - HERE. There's a detailed explanation of how the engine numbers work. You have a MkII car, so the number will start 18H ( 1800 cc, Horizontal, meaning transverse fitting). Looking at the pictures of your engine, you have twin carbs (Td), an alternator (Bf), cable gear shift (Ne), presumably standard gear ratios (Te)and it would originally have had a mechanical petrol pump on the back of the engine (Yd). There may be other things I can't see. Nearest match I can find on the cross reference chart is 551. Can't see emission hoses to the carburettors, so assume positive crankcase ventilation, which with twin carbs is option C. Third group starts with H or L depending on compression ratio. You have a four digit number on the engine, so you might as well use it. 18H 551C H3*** would be a reasonable stab at a realistic engine number. Chris.
