Hi In a recent issue of the " BMC Experience" Some asked about the cylinder head fitted to thier 1800, it has an "A" stamped on it. We all know that "O" stamped heads off late Mk2's are the preferred head. Can anyone in this forum tell me what this "A" stamped head belongs too, is it early 1800 or perhaps a UK Mk3 head, or off an MGB. There's also one fitted to my ute as well as the one asked about in BMC Exp. Magazine.
Also thanks to those who donated to Aussie 18/100 site, it's alive and well, awesome.
Regards Simmo.

The best information I have found so far is here - item 9. Whether it answers your "A" question I am unsure. In the UK the "best" head was generally thought of as the one fitted to the 1800S which supposedly had Daniel Richmond's input (Downton Engineering). Whether that is still the case may be debatable given the 9:5 compression and modern fuels. As you will see from the link which is aimed at the US MG engines, there were all permutations. My preference was for the larger inlet valves of all UK Mk11/111 1800s and the duplex timing gear and double valve springs of the Mk11, not Mk111. Hi!
This is what I can tell from my engines, spare engines and cylinder heads:
Cylinder head 12 H 1326, mk 1 1800, small inlet valves and double valve springs, no letter stamped on cylinder head.
Cylinder head 12 H 2709, mk 2 1800, large inlet valves and double valve springs, letter O stamped on cylinder head.
Cylinder head 12 H 2709, Marina 1800 (and possibly mk 3 1800?), large inlet valves, single valve springs, letter A stamped on cylinder head.
Cylinder head 12 H 4736, Princess 1800, small inlet valves, single valve springs, letter E stamped on cylinder head.
I wonder why the Princess didn't have the larger inlet valves? Due to emission regulations, fuel consumption/ oil crisis? However the 1800 Marina kept the large inlet valves until they quit the 1800 in 1978, at least as far as I know. So just a thought.
Tommy.
