Can anyone help?!
I have a Wolseley 18/85S, bought just over a year ago and have been enjoying improving it gradually. I'm moving house soon and will have a garage so all those big jobs I've been saving will get done. The nearside sill has had a replacement skin tacked over the top of the old one. Peering in with a torch from the inside of the car I can see that the inner strengthener has rotted towards the front.
Has anyone any experience of replacing a sill and could give me a few tips. I can weld and know about bracing. Do the bottom of the door posts need to be cut away to gain access? Is it worth seam welding patches to the inner and outer at the front if the rest of the sill is fine? Any information will be greatly appreciated.
By the way, had the distributor rebuilt by 'Distributor Doctor'. The difference in the smoothness and power of the engine is considerable.

Hi Richard, welcome aboard. Pictures will probably speak louder than words....... Thought we might get away with some patching. Took the whole thing off in the end, just below the upper "step". We didn't brace the door apetures, as the "B" post was still secured the top step of the sill. Inner membrane is basically a flat plate with a lower "L" section to allow it to be plug welded to the outer. Be prepared to deal with a surprising amount of rust in the inner sill section as well - again this is just flat plate. You will need to drill off the spot weld under the front wing and release the wing securing bolts down the "A" post for total access. Front door off is a definite help. Sills were available from Hadrian Panels. They have stopped manufacturing, but as far as I'm aware, residual stock is still available. These are straight, front to back - the pukka sill (If you can find one) has a slight bow along its length. If you go the eBay route, check under Maxi as well as 1800 - they are the same. Chris.

Thanks very much for the photos and advice. It's good to know what's in there before I fire up the angle grinder. I hadn't thought about plug welding the inner strengthener; that makes it simpler. I'll let you know how it goes. But, first I'm moving house and second, my 9 week old son seems to suck time into a black hole (in a nice sort of way). Thanks again, Richard
