The reference is very interesting, and I agree for a car giving head gasket problems that it makes sense to consider the studs as a possible cause.
However I have never replaced the studs on the old engines I have worked on and have had no problems subsequently.
On one engine a 1938 Ford Vee 8 sidevalve when I was forced to remove the studs for a rebore. I couldn't remove some of them and the machinist offered to get them out, he snapped three of them off. We had to drill them out and fit Helicoils.
If building a high performance engine it makes more sense.
Regards Kels.

Hi Kels I haven't replaced them either and also not had problems, but maybe I should have, I wasn't properly aware of the stretching issue at the time. It now makes sense to me for the cost involved. regards David The reference is very interesting, and I agree for a car giving head gasket problems that it makes sense to consider the studs as a possible cause.
