Hi folks,
On Saturday, we'll be trotting off from Northants to North Wales to collect the new petrol tank, made by Andy Belfield. As written in another post, I was quite concerned with the state of the original tank.
Tony Wood, of LOCI, recommended Andy Belfield. He's the guy who built the MK1 landcrab with a VW VR6 engine.
Andy sent photos of the new tank during its construction, (I'm hoping Chris can post the pic as I cant).
The tank is very tough, made from much heavier gauge steel than the original, so I guess it will outlast me.
Andy will make a new tank to order, but will require the filler neck from your old tank. I took the whole tank so Andy could do his stuff.
I will of course let you know when it's fitted.
Don't risk botched repairs if your old tank is weeping or badly rusted. If you can smell petrol check it out, don't leave it. A build up of fumes could end in disaster.
But, don't think a new hand made tank is a cheap option. They are £500 each, and come pressure tested and painted. But I'm now certain, it's the right decision.
If members are facing a similar dilemma to me, give me a shout and I will pass on Andys number.
Jeff

Hi Jeff. Just popped in to add your email message and you've beaten me to it. Fuel Tank by Penguin 45, on Flickr Looks like a good solid job. Wise words about the condition of tanks - safety critical, so nice to know that Andy is providing a viable alternative. Chris.

Well that's another job done. I finally finished the installation of The Belfield fuel tank and very pleased I am with the result. The tank is a little deeperthan the original, to allow for the 2200, as well as 1800 models. The 2200, holds more fuel. The only difference in this respect is the 1800 fuel sender unit will read empty when in fact there's possibly a couple of gallons of fuel left. I can live with that, better than the other way round. Don't forget, if anyone else takes this option, it's essential to add a fuel filter between tank and pump. Any minute metal particles need to be prevented from entering the pump and system in general.
