This popped up on Facebook (I know, I know...). 9th February 1992, half way between Putney Bridge and East Putney Underground Stations, up on a roof! Photo Leon Guyot. Does anyone know the story behind this? It was at least three stories up there! Is it still there? Well, it isn't still there, but what on earth was it doing up there? Chris.

When I lived in SW London and was working in the City, I used to see this from the underground train window every day. Unfortunately I could not find out why or how it was there. I'm amazed to see this picture after all these years. I'm trying to recall when I last saw it as I moved to Yorkshire in 1993 but still travelled on that route on the odd occasion of work commitments. I do remember that the last time I saw it the bodywork had deteriorated badly whereas in the earlier years from what you could see from the train it wasn't a total wreck! A student prank perhaps? Chris.

It's a Vauxhall Chevette, though it was more how it came to be there.
This was more or less opposite where I lived in Burton on Trent at the time. I took the picture standing on the pavement at the side of the road. From memory the story was that in the early hours of the morning the driver of the Chevette managed to lose control of it on a fairly wide, fairly straight, 40mph well lit road. They left the road over to the right of where the picture was taken and crashed the car against the upper storey of the house. The window it hit was was a bedroom and someone was asleep inside. I don't think anyone was badly hurt but it was significant enough an incident to make the Burton Mail which was and may still be a local daily paper. I believe Nick Larkin (well known in UK Classic Car circles) was once a reporter for this esteemed organ.
