Here is an old advertisement for Castrol Oils featuring a towing Austin 1800. What is that thing on the roof of the car, how is it attached and how does it stay on. Looks like a sort of must-have gadget from 40 years ago. for info - KYF662K was on the road until 1985.Nick

I did think it might have been some sort of perescope device. It must have been a bit of a liability in use. It also depends on the caravan windows lining up and being at the right height. Another extended mirror on the nearside would have been more useful for the rig in the picture.
Interesting website. The 1800 does seem to have been well favoured as a tow car

somewhere around £120 in today's money. I know nothing about touring caravans though I imagine today's equivalent would be something like a rear view camera. MY LR Freelander has one which shows guidance lines on the screen to display where you are likely to finish up depending on steering wheel position.
I've recently pick up a pile of old magazine articles which is where the original picture came from. I'll keep and eye out for any more interesting stuff
