This reminds me of when I bought Mo 16 years ago. I could only get 3 gears. If she went into second she wouldn’t go into third and if she went into third second wasn’t available The cure? I fitted a replacement gearbox Couldn’t even remove the gear lever nowadays
Hope you sort it soon
Dave

That's why I queried whether selecting second gear and then moving immediately to first can stop the input shaft from turning. If the bush is badly seized, this may not be sufficient but if it works should point you in the right direction. You did note that with the engine off the engagement is a bit odd so that seems to point more in the direction of Nick's suggestion.
Is this the car with the roller clutch release bearing? - Are you able to measure the throw of the clutch? It's a great shame they didn't invest more and use a system similar to the Mini.

I would think reverse would be the main issue because of lack of syncro for this problem as the article suggests. Check if the transfer gears stop when you push the clutch in. This will soon let you know if the clutch is not releasing. I have heard of baulk rings getting stuck but only on a brand new gearbox. Nick

So, my radical new repair technique has come up trumps. Give it a good dose of looking at, moan about it to some friends on the internet, then don't use the car for three weeks. Went down to Preston today, via driving MrsP to Burnley in the rush hour and the car has behaved faultlessly. I have no other explanation. Had a fun day in Preston, sorting out the wiring on a 1922 Wolseley. 100 years old! Six volt electrics, so all connections have to be clinically clean and properly secured. After 5 hours work, it grumbled into life for the first time in many years. Nice feeling and ecstatic mate. Chris.

Still behaving herself. Been down to Cornwall and back to help Dad out and do some running about for him. About 750 miles covered, ½ pint of oil used and 36 mpg. Not too shabby. The 12 gallon tank meant I could avoid buying fuel on the motorway. Michaelwood services on the way back had unleaded at 186.9 per litre. Absolutely eyewatering.
Oh, heater stopped working. Again. Hoses were hot, so got to be the flaps preventing warm air escaping. Really need to fit that heater box I refurbished two and a half years ago!
Chris.

What's stopping you, it's not as though working on the heater is difficult. David Still behaving herself. Oh, heater stopped working. Again. Hoses were hot, so got to be the flaps preventing warm air escaping. Really need to fit that heater box I refurbished two and a half years ago! Chris.

Two hoses, four screws, two wires and two cables. How hard can it be....? I love an optimist! Dave

I was convinced that the Crab assembly line started with the heater and the whole car was then built around it.

You can just imagine if it was included in the Haynes Manual: "Heater Assembly - Remove car. Re-assembly is the..." And another new bit: Sun visor clip by Penguin 45, on Flickr How long have these been obsolete? Six hours work and now there can be lots. Why did nobody take this sort of thing on years ago? Harrumph. Chris.

That's an excellent description of how to make the polyester resin cast and the silicon moulds, very impressive. If you want to read Chris' article and I recommend you do, just a gentle reminder you will need to be logged in to access the technical section where it is located. David
