Am struggling with this photobucket thing - there's loads of new photos - just use the original link if you're interested!

Easy peasy, Andrew. Simplest way is to click on the image you want to add to the forum and it will become full sized in your Photobucket account. On the right of the screen, there's a box that says "Links". The bottom one says "IMG". Click on the text next to it starting "URL" - it will briefly turn yellow and say "copied". Pop back over here, right click your mouse and paste the code on the screen. Done. Chris.

Seem to have lost the photos of the o/s sill being replaced but here's a bit of an update - if this works then medal to Chris for his help and patience! O/S arm that supports everything was u/s so new one now in, the nearside front wasn't as bad as it could have been although removal of wing disclosed the usual problems. Crossmember was pretty ok - have new valance from Ray House ready to go on. Am still humming and ha ing about the engine - it's very tempting as it's sat there to start pulling it apart. Am wondering if anyones got a good engine and gearbox I could drop back into my car and take my time (and money) over the rebuild of the other one - they can even have the substitute engine back in 6 months or so!

I can't believe last post was 18th Dec. Quite a lot has happened since. Structural work all done - thank goodness. The engine went away to an outfit called Skiptune in the end for one of their stage 2 engines - 1860 cc 285 cam everything balanced and a little bit of lightening here and there - comes back this week. Distributor did go to the Distributor Dr - am going electronic and he's rebuilt it to match the cam. Gearbox went to a guy on the Wirral - Alan Voights - who for a very reasonable sum has rebuilt it. Carbs have gone to Burlen for a rebuild as well. Maniflow are providing one of their exhaust manifolds and exhausts. A lot of people who worked at Downton are doing bits an bobs on the car and it's interesting/heartwarming how enthusiastic they are about Landcrabs - they all helped develop the special tuning mods back in the day. Steve Harris - another Downton ex - will do the final set up once it's all run in on the rolling road at Janspeed. With all the new metal it was proving difficult to match the paint so I decided to get both sides painted, then thought it might look silly so am painting the whole car - which then uncovered more horrors in the doors (not really a surprise). Currently in primer - should be painted by the end of the week. Don't think it'll be back together for pride of longbridge - which is a shame - but should be all done by end of April. Pictures to follow.

I think " Quite a lot has happened since" is somewhat of an understatement! David I can't believe last post was 18th Dec. Quite a lot has happened since. Pictures to follow.

A couple of things worth considering if not too late. I think it would be worth getting hold of a Mk111 gear-change mechanism as this is generally better imoh than the cables and you may need to change gear more often at lower engine speeds than with the standard engine - it also overcomes the oil leak from the cables issue. It may also be worth fitting a vernier pulley so that the camshaft timing can be tweaked to move the torque curve up or down to suit your car and the way you want to drive it. Just a thought perhaps ask the experts? Regards David I can't believe last post was 18th Dec. Quite a lot has happened since. Structural work all done - thank goodness. Hi David - good point re the vernier - it's got one as part of the spec. + a few other bits and bobs like the uprated oil pump and I'm going for the spin on filter with the ability to add an oil cooler at some point.I had the same thought re cables/rods - received wisdom is that with the lcb manifold it's not straightforward and that if it's set up properly then the cables aren't too bad. To be honest I didn't really have a problem with the speed of the gearchange - it wasn't rifle bolt (!) but I've driven cars with a lot worse changes. Also have to be a little bit careful with some mods as the rally regs can be quite specific on some things - again depending on who is running it - period mods are ok but some can get a bit funny if you retro fit stuff from later cars. Cheers A

I agree the cable change in good condition is actually very precise even if it's not that fast. The MK111 1800 cars had a bend in the exhause pipe to clear the rod change mechanism so I guess it is a similar issue for the lcb. I see on Peter Burgess' website he refers to an article on a rally prepared landcrab in Classics January 2004 using the Piper 285 cam. Have you seen it? Peter Burgess I do recall reading it but don't have a copy. Yes David I've had quite a few chats with him and to be honest he would have done the engine but couldn't look at it until May/June and this was last November! The engine is to his spec basically so am hoping to have a "gem" as well!

Pictures to follow but car MOT'd last week and back on road being run in. First impressions are the suspension mods - little mini shocks on the front, bump stops on the back and anti roll bar - have been a great success. Still all the comfort but none of the front to back pitching and it corners really well - flatter and handling much more neutral - negligible understeer. Engine we'll have to wait and see - engine very tight and timing etc not perfect yet. It's going on rolling road on Thursday - no power runs(!) as still running in but will be able to get a more thorough set up. Initial impressions are it's going to be a hoot once it's on the cam but may be a little gutless before that - I was warned! Only neg is the boomy maniflow single box exhaust which is fun for 10 mins but a pain after that - it'll be getting a second box on it v.soon. Did car run with this lot www.bjautobits.co.uk/dews.htm on Sunday and no overheating - only other things to sort are an incredibly optimistic speedo 60mph indicated is 50mph actual (!) and a fuel gauge that says it's a quarter full when tank is empty - presume sender / sticking float? More later after r.road and will sort pictures. Cheers

Good to hear the car's got its MOT and is back on the road. Thanks for the feedback on the suspension mods it looks as though these are well worthwhile. If the fuel sender isn't sticking then it could be the bi-metallic voltage regulator stuck. The system should stabilise at somewhere between 9-10v. What size wheels and tyres are you using? Look forward to seeing the pics later. Regards David Pictures to follow but car MOT'd last week and back on road being run in. Car made 85 bhp at the wheels on the rollers and running sweetly throughout rev range not gutless as before - quite chuffed as rally cars were circa 77 bhp. maniflow sorted out the exhaust and it's now a perfect balance of mildly rorty under hard acceleration and quiet the rest of the time. Petrol tank problem is the tank refurb people put in a pick up pipe that's too short so that's going back to them. Unfortunately now that car is quiet can now hear knock from steering rack........

Great stuff - well done.
I have had several bouts of knocking from the steering rack, over the years. On every occasion it has proved to be a rack mounting bolt working loose, so I'd check that first.
Chris.
