Right - the car is driving me mad! I can now hear the fuel pump ticking away, that annoying noise that goes away when you put your foot on the clutch as well as a few other squeaks! Whilst I appreciate the easiest solution is probably to open up the tappets and drown it all out as before (!) I'd like to start with the squeak I get from the plastic shroud that surrounds the steering column - is there a time honoured method of curing this - any suggestions? Thanks Andrew

Blimey. How quiet is your car? I've got a Facet pump (famously noisy) in the back of the Austin and I can't hear that when ths engine's running. It's mounted on a couple of rubber exhaust bobbins, mind.
The shroud. Is it assembled properly? All the screws home? It can be very awkward to put together correctly.
Chris.

Have you had the steering column apart.
It is possible to fit the outer tube too short into the bulkhead seal. This means that the cowling will be too high causing it to catch on the steering wheel. ave o look at the spacing for the stalk.

The squeaky shroud was remedied easily and quickly with some minor fettling and a discreet blob of blue tak. I then turned my attention to squeaky front seat - which only makes a noise over severe bumps. I assumed (!) that the new seats were the culprits so having taken them out at least half a dozen times and applied assorted bits of foam, neoprene, polyurethane bushes etc etc it was still no better. Daughter asked what I was up to and remarked that the old (and in her estimation much nicer !) seat always did that - I just probably didn't notice it. On reflection she's right - I think. Next thing to be tackled then are the captive nuts - one of them is always a devil to get the screw into and I'm now fairly convinced that what I'm hearing is said screw protesting. Anyone ever had a problem with these? Cheers Andrew

Ahh. Blue tac. It should be part of everyone's tool box along with black duct tape.

Am gradually eliminating things. Drove car slowly on private road without the problem seat and noise still there - it's like a creaking sound. Have now found if I rock the car extremely forcibly whilst it's stationary I can get it to do it - sounds like it's under the car towards the front but you know the tricks sounds can play! Can anyone advise what my next checklist should be - please. Thanks Andrew

The creaking could be a displacer on the way out. Mine had an issue like that. It was resolved after one went. On that line of thinking to could be any of the parts involved in the removal. An Alternative is that it could be your knees.

Thanks I'll oil both knees first and see if that helps!

Might be worth checking the bottom rubber bushes in the front suspension housings.
P45.

Might be worth checking the bottom rubber bushes in the front suspension housings. P45. An easy and quick way to check them is to spray them with WD40, its quite a good rubber lube.
