Rest of family gardening, watching Olympics or other "interesting" things so decided to fit winter wheels and tyres to see what car would look like! I like it - bit more "Junior Johnson" if you know what I mean! Also smaller (width) rims and softer tyres has made the whole thing much more comfortable and steering lighter. Currently 30 psi all round - which seems a little soft at the front. Praying for torrential rain, snow and ice now!
Camera angle isn't quite right - looks better in the flesh!

Looks smart in the photos too. What are the actual tyres sizes and what are the summer/standard one? Cheers

Princess 1800 gearbox? I find the original mk 2 1st and 2nd gear quite low, and the difference between 2nd and 3rd is rather big. The Princess gears are much better, with quite a "long lasting" 2nd gear. Tommy I'm back onto this idea - must be that time of year! If I can get hold of one is it a relatively straightforward swap? Also have been reading that some of the S's had the final drive from the Mk 1 which is 4 something to 1 which might explain my situation - any idea how I check - anyone - please?

I believe some rally cars used the lower ratio final drive. If you knew your speedo was accurate and matched to the final drive you could determine the road speed per 1000 rpm (after adjusting for tyre size - compared with the standard Mk11 165x14 80 profile). The only way I can think of given the above uncertainties is to actually determine how many turns of the engine are required for 1 revolution of the wheels. I guess this means taking out the plugs and turning the engine by hand while someone watches a jacked up wheel rotate. There may be an easier way, but I can't think of anything else other than measuring distances using mile posts and keeping a constant rpm using an accurate tacho and doing the maths. Maybe there is some external ID on the transmission, anyone know? EDIT I should of course have said you need to engage 4th gear which is straight through for the above checks (I've been watching Goodwood Revival 2016 live on Youtube Sept 9-11, didn't spot a single Crab sadly.) regards David Also have been reading that some of the S's had the final drive from the Mk 1 which is 4 something to 1 which might explain my situation - any idea how I check - anyone - please?

Sorry for ignoring tyre query and above response. Have been busy-ish fettling car for French Rally which has come round rather quickly and wrestling with installation of rally trip meter. Will update with pictures soon. Cheers Andrew

Pathetic effort from me on posting/replying front - so a few words in lieu. Off on rally tomorrow - car running good and looking forward to it. Made fatal mistake of fiddling with carbs/jets/fuel regulator (I don't really know what I'm doing!) yesterday and have now - finally - managed to get everything back to how it was before I started messing around. Car loaded up with everything I could think of apart form a spare displacer or two so will just have to cross my fingers on that one. Interesting entry list - everything from a Model A to an Audi Quattro but it's about navigational accuracy rather than speed. There's also an Austin 1100 - yay! And an AC Aceca as well as the usual Minis, Volvo, MG's. Have bought video camera thing so may be able to make a movie of trip - we shall see. Cheers A

Thanks Gents - am sure one day I'll get one of those phones where I believe you can take photos, make videos and post them all in one - by magic! Haven't even managed to get hang of facebook - gave up when I realised I was just writing to myself on my own wall or something and wondered why no one replied!!! See you in a week and a bit! On a seperate subject - really fancy this: www.historics.co.uk/buying/auctions/2016-11-26/cars/ref-131-1937-ford-v8.aspxWent on website to look at the Sanchez ute which I love but is a bit out of my price range and also the 3 litre - but I've had one of those. The pilot ticks a lot of boxes, has the eminently tuneable flathead engine and it's pre-war so get's into a lot of interesting events. Cheers A

Well the engine's not out yet and welding work is not going as quick as I'd hoped! Although one side is almost done. To be fair I've added a few bits and bobs as I went along. I've had grand plans to rebuild the engine and gearbox but I must say apart from heavy mystery oil consumption there was nothing wrong with the way either the engine or gearbox operated. As I'm keen not to spend the national debt just yet I'm coming round to just putting it back in once the welding's done and enjoy using the car. Have toyed with the idea of Peter Burgess head and different cam whilst the engine's out but am concerned that up ing the power quite dramatically without checking out the bottom end may be asking for trouble. Gut feeling is to get back behind the wheel and if in 10 months I really feel I need more power, then do the job properly then. Any views opinions gratefully received. Cheers Having recently rebuild a couple of engines I would not worry too much about the gearbox. It is used to convert Rover V8 to FWD. As far a cams go, MGB ones are the recommended route if you are only using on road. Downside is you will have to fit an electric fuel pump. Electronic ignition is a good idea, I got an early 123 ignition with a choice of 16 curves. The latest is programmable with a laptop. Have fun

Pilot, I never knew they did a Coupe like that. Don't suppose it will handle anything like a Landcrab.

Thanks for posting the photos, some interesting cars there. Do we know the other 1800S owner? What size wheels and tyres did you use in the end? The gym is definitely a better option than electric power steering!
regards
