I *think* the only one you can do is grab the diff out of a 1.7 Ambassador. Now find one.......

Princess 1800 gearbox?
I find the original mk 2 1st and 2nd gear quite low, and the difference between 2nd and 3rd is rather big. The Princess gears are much better, with quite a "long lasting" 2nd gear.

According to my old brochures the Leyland Princess and the Ambassador that followed all had a 3.72 final drive ratio compared to 3.88 for the Landcrab. What sort of difference would that make to MPH per 1,000 rpm, is there a formula that you can use?

The formula is straight forward. If the current MPH / 1000 rpm = 20 (for example) then changing to the Princess gearbox / final drive would be 20 x 3.88/3.72 = 20.8 mph. Another way of changing the overall ratio is by increasing the wheel size. Tyre profiles also affect the ration. There are look up tables on the net to help can convert the Mk11 original 165x14 tyres circumference to whatever wheel/ tyre size you select. Again just divide the new circumference by the old. That torque and power curve is just amazing. I can understand why you are so tempted. Normally that increase in power would give you nothing under 3-4000 rpm and be unsuited to road use.
Is it naturally aspirated, it looks as though it is boosted but perhaps not with Peter B's magic. Have you ever thought of a supercharger? These were available in the early days and now I have been watching (on Youtube) a classic mini conversion which is using the supercharger from a BMW Mini. Apparently there are plenty around second hand as they have been failing under warranty but the classic mini conversion doesn't use the gears that are the issue and can be discarded. If it fits under a mini bonnet perhaps it would go into a crab?

Yes it is pretty special and all with twin SU's! Was thinking that with the right gearing I should take it to Bonneville and try and break 150 mph!!

Using David's formula a Princess final drive would give you only an extra 4mph at 5,000rpm. Bonneville at 150mph sounds quite exciting. If you've never seen this before then here is a bit of inspiration from Jaguar. Turn up the volume and listen to that engine start. Nick this Link to You Tube if the vid doesn't work

Thanks for that...maybe modern is the way to go! I do struggle to get excited about new cars though and tend to judge them by their mpg and how much they'll tow! Have sold some motorbikes and other stuff over Xmas and bought a classic boat with a friend - it's got a Ford WaterMota (crossflow) in it & am trying to resist the urge to modify that! It's a thing called a Freeman 23 btw. looks a bit of a tub (it is!) but the interior is great with lots of wood (veneer). Haven't been out much in the crab recently but I promised myself I'd do the Pomeroy Trophy in Feb. Must admit enthusiasm is waning. Increasing safety legislation for circuit races (all very sensible I know) is making this probably one off outing starting to look expensive - apparently I need an FIA approved rain light as well as new fire extinguisher, possibly a HANS device and crash hat to go with it, plus entry fee is a lot of money. Added to which there is always the possibility of a collision + the thought of having to drill holes in the car for the light and get up in the middle of the night to get to Silverstone. And I'll want to go through the car again and just check the suspension/tie rods etc as it had quite a hard life last year. What a wimp! Will def do a sprint series this year though as regs are still not too demanding and the Downton one www.bjautobits.co.uk/dews.htm may be the one. Seems more appropriate as the car is loosely Downton-esque and most of hill climbs are within an hour and a half. I may be in a class with a turbo charged corsa though which seems an unequal challenge... More later! Cheers and Happy New Year. Andrew

BOAT. Isn't that an acronym for Break Out Another Thousand. Good of luck with it.

Never heard that one before but am using it all the time now! Pomeroy Trophy thing has resolved itself - my engine isn't big enough (yet) - it's 1950cc minimum so if I'd gone for the big bore on the engine instead of the 1860cc I'm running I'd be in - but I'm not at least this year!

After all the hot air above - have decided not to do a particular sprint series - just do a few that I fancy so besides the usual trips to Brooklands and Goodwood have entered this one as well - www.motorsportatthepalace.co.uk/racing-at-the-palace/4590931106Have done it in a more modern car when they started racing again in 2010 and it's great fun to be racing in a park in London. Big crowds - huge mix of machinery - am competing on the Sunday if any south London crabbers fancy coming along. Am also doing this rally in November - it's a navigational not out and out speed. Am debating what colour to paint the steel wheels I'll be using. Am currently considering body colour (antelope), black, red (to pick up the stripe and the interior) or minilite silver. Any views/opinions/suggestions welcome. Crab getting pre-season checkover soon to see what I've worn out over the last year - hopefully nothing too horrendous. Cheers Andrew

Car MOT'd yesterday - brake light switch needed coaxing into life as well as horn but otherwise all well. IMHO all symptoms of lack of use - shame on me! Once that done spent a good half hour checking with garage chap potential trouble spots - tie bars/engine moutings/driveshafts etc but nothing bad to report - obviously am not trying hard enough on track. Have a couple of car runs this month but first outing in anger is at Goodwood on 7th May. Note to self to put some road miles on car this month. Cheers Andrew

Congratulations! I was watching a Youtube video (sorry lost the link) of a guy in the US who had a number of Ferraris and Lambos. He stored them over winter and the Ferraris developed faults while standing, such as engine system light warnings, dropping oil from the transfer box, airbag warning lights and not starting - despite being fully serviced before laying up. He said they run fine when used. I think it makes your horn and brake lights pale into insignificance!

Saturday was Sprint at Goodwood - pretty pleased with how the car ran and it was a fun day out. Here's the results - the eagle eyed will notice I was marginally quicker than a Porsche Boxster & a new-ish MX5 amongst others! www.brightonandhovemotorclub.co.uk/files/goodwood/2016gw1results.pdfDespite all the faff with distributors over the winter I was no quicker than last year - my gut feeling is it's still too lean at the top end but enough's enough. As usual the car was well received by all and raised many smiles. Next stop Crystal Palace...

Sounds like good fun. I am disturbed to see that some of the Austin 7s ran faster times.... Chris.
