It's related to water on the brain (hydrocephalus) but is called hydrolasticus landcrabus. It appears there's no cure other than trying to keep cool . Symptoms include making stupid posts on Proboards. David If I had an oil cooler fitted I think I would also fit a very loud alarm that warned of pressure drop If you had an oil cooler fitted, I'd love to know which medical research programme you were part of............. Chris.

I don't see specific information about the Landcrab there and was mainly concerned about "the Rally cars had them (and were a source of failure). You might want to read this and then probably forget the idea !"
And wanted to understand what caused the failure. I have one on my TR6 racecar and on my MGB, and there is one on my Trident, and actually I have a giant one on my Series IIA 109(its probably bigger than the LC radiator) and have never had a problem with them. The MGB and the TR6 are set up with mounting holes from the factory, I believe the earlier MG's had them as OEM equipment. Where are they mounted on the Landcrabs? I'm guessing somewhere behind the grill.

Unfortunately there was no other detail than the fact that they failed for undisclosed reasons (leaks and bursting) and led to total engine failure. As I believe they were the same units as fitted to MGBs at the time, I assume it was due to the way or position where they were mounted leading to fatigue or being easily damaged. Nickrs has one fitted to his Wolseley so he would be able to confirm where his car's oil cooler is mounted - the grille is different of course. I have always thought that an audible warning device should be fitted to warn of loss of water and oil to supplement the warning lights that often tell you when it's too late. The original link was about oil coolers not Landcrabs, sorry my poor wording and the comments about the Landcrab oil filter failures is available in a number of separate articles eg Oil cooler failuresIf you Google MGB oil cooler failures you will see a number of current threads about very premature hose failures and ongoing questions about their quality. Hope this sets your mind at rest. You can always monitor oil pressure and oil temperature of course to ee whether you actually need one. Regards David I don't see specific information about the Landcrab there and was mainly concerned about "the Rally cars had them (and were a source of failure). Not so easy to get a good angle but here it is mounted behind the top of the grille portion. It feeds in and out from just above the oil filter. Nick

I think the quality of the oil coolers has gone up and the type of hose are superior now, so most failures we see are from vibration. They usually crack at the connection to the hose. I've had the same one on my B for 25 years and my TR6 for 11 years, no problems. I use SS hoses on the racecar. I think I may try to mount one on my Landcrab, it really can't hurt. Thanks for the info.

The problems with hoses appear to relate to recent purchases probably imported from the Far East and not to the original stock items.
