Fascinating but really quite scary; what kind of quality can you possibly expect at that price? Did you find anything on rebuild kits from a similar source? regards David

We have all kinds of legislation to ensure vehicle safety and now we have no idea about the quality of replacement parts used in areas where failure may lead to a life threatening situation. This is not just an issue for classic cars. If you have a new car you can ensure you only fit manufacturer's original parts, but it looks like a lottery or possibly Russian Roulette once the original parts are NLA. Where I live there are three sources. (a) The most expensive - original parts from main agents; (b) maybe 20-50% cheaper allegedly the same parts in manufacturers' boxes from small outlets or (c) at a fraction of the price items sold openly as copy items. My experience of (known) copies has been limited to light bulbs. Genuine Toyota still no failures after 6 years and 130,000km, copy bulbs at 10% of the costs, life expectancy on 2nd older vehicle 3-24 months - no problems with charging circuit voltage. Turning back to the original issue, the brake servo, it is probably worth considering a fairly cheap mod to the brake m/s to fit a low fluid level warning indicator which should give early warning of most seal problems but not pipe failure which is something you can check and normally prevent. regards David It's all good mate, relevant to the problem at hand _b -Indy

Well Tony says 145GBP + delivery for a new Lockheed servo.
So let's say 170GBP all up, then I need to modify the bracket, so say 35GBP for someone to make and weld adjustments
So around 200GBP all up.
Or order the reseal kit for the Girling, say 140GBP, then I need to resleeve the thing, so say 75GBP.
So around 210GBP all up.
Hmmm will need to think it over today, but I guess the Lockheed makes more sense as I know it won't fail, where the Girling could, even more likely if I do the work ha!
What would you lads do?

If you get the Girling sleeved it will be extremely unlikely to fail again and will be a straight refit.
Chris.

I'll get the servo back from my father in law and crack it open.
I'll think it over the next couple of days, it would be nice to keep the original servo. Just paranoid I'll start doing the rebuild and it won't work.

There is wonderful saying here very often used by the locals "up to you" I guess it depends on how much you wish to keep the engine bay looking neat and original. Good luck! If you do go for a rebuild kit make sure it comes with full instructions, I have read reports of some being delivered without them. Although to quote Haynes reassembly is the reverse of dismantling, you will need to know such things as the need to do the final assembly with the vacuum pipe attached and engine running if I recall. I would have found it tough without instructions. Maybe someone here has some they can post then you can assess whether you wish to do it. Does the Lockheed servo have to be installed at a certain angle?
Also what about removing the servo altogether?

Does the Lockheed servo have to be installed at a certain angle? Between 25 o and 45 o according to the instructions. Mine is bolted straight to the bulkhead and seems happy enough. Also what about removing the servo altogether? -Andrew How strong is your right leg? I really wouldn't......... Chris.

yeah removing it isn't really a smart idea aye lol
Reckon there's enough room to mount it onto the bulk head without moving the radiator overflow etc?

Finished up like this, Indy. Mind you, with a single carb you'll have a bit more room. Chris.

Cheers for that mate. As for the single carb, I will no doubt end up with twins down the line Andrew
