Might be worth checking the carb dashpot has oil to the correct level. Otherwise something breaking down when hot, suggestions, coil, condensor, HT lead.
Regards kels.

Righto, two things:
One, I've decided to swallow my pride and take the car in to be tune tomorrow lol
Two, I am about to get some rust/paint work done on the Wolseley and was just curious as to how one removes the varies trim parts, e.g. the 'whiskers' on the front, the trim around the roof and cow hips.
Also any suggestions for stuff to place in my next LOCI order.
Cheers,
Andrew
PS I did check the dashpot oil and that seemed fine, thanks for the tip!

Good luck with the tune up! If you are going to get the rust /paint "done" then I would let the body shop take them off. If you are doing it yourself you need to ease the chrome strips off very carefully using a soft plastic lever and be careful not to bend them. Be prepared for the supporting lugs to break if they are corroded - probably worth getting a set of new lugs - maybe someone knows if there are any suitable replacenment plastic ones that won't damage the bodywork? regards David Righto, two things: One, I've decided to swallow my pride and take the car in to be tune tomorrow lol Two, I am about to get some rust/paint work done on the Wolseley and was just curious as to how one removes the varies trim parts, e.g. the 'whiskers' on the front, the trim around the roof and cow hips. Cheers David,
Tune up went all good. Also got a compression test done which showed that while compression is good, the range is too great (i.e. not within 10%, which is what it should be correct?)
No. 1 = 175psi No. 2 = 185psi No. 3 = 171psi No. 4 = 154psi
Mechanic reckons the ring on number 4 is a bit worn which would explain the compression, and also the knocking noise I hear when she's idling (piston slap).
I mentioned to him that I was keen on finding another engine to rebuild and then swap them over, as luck would have it we went around back to a mountain of BMC/BL engines and he had an 18H engine with a gearbox, but minus the head. Said I could have it for $100NZD! So I'll arrange some transport and grab that puppy off him!
I was meant to remove some trim today, but have been too busy with house work and dropping the car off etc. I'll do tomorrow morning. Mr. Wood reckons I shouldn't touch the gutter chrome as it'll just crease, so I'll just tape that up I guess.

Did your mechanic try the "wet compression test" - ie dropping some oil into No4 cylinder and retesting? If the pressure rises it suggests rings if not a cylinder head problem, valve/ guide gasket etc. If it is the cylinder head then it's a much easier job. Cheers David, Tune up went all good. Hey Dave,
I don't think he carried out such a test, but then again I never asked.

He's the expert, you can't be expected to tell him what to do. Can you give him a call to find out then you can plan what you want to do? Not a bad idea to invest in a compression tester they're not too expensive and it's always there when you need it after working on the engine. regards David Hey Dave, I don't think he carried out such a test, but then again I never asked. -Andrew

I'll ask him when I grab the engine _b
And I have always been meaning to get off my arse and get a compression tester. When I dropped her off I didn't think he was going to do a compression test but he did it regardless. He also check the igition leads (one was faulty so he replaced it) and also placed new seals on my rocker cover nuts as they were a bit past it (this I had noticed lol).

Your mechanic seems good. If there is low compression on 1 cylinder there is a limit as to what he can achieve as far as tuning goes so he didn't want to waste his time and your money. It's a it like checking there the 4 wheels on the car before worrying about the top speed. I assumed that was the case, he still sorted the mixture etc, but as you said what he could do was limited. Was busy today removing bits and bobs off the car: -Andrew Your mechanic seems good. I see holes........... Chris.

Yep, the one under the left grill/vent is a rust hole, the one to the top left of the same vent is filler (tsk tsk tsk). So I've charge my panel worker to remove it and fix it up as best he can.
There's also a bit of filler under the right light. This leads us to believe someone crashed into something somewhere in the last 42 years lol.
Of course you might remember the filler hole in the back, we dug that out and it looks like it's just a big dent and not a rust hole being covered up. Again same deal, some poor bloke has backed it into something and not done/had done a good repair job as the filler is around 5mm thick!

That's actually a quite awkward spot to get at, which might explain the filler. Yolu going to see if the one at the back will push out?
Chris.

The bloke doing the work reckoned he could push out the rear dent. I haven't heard from him today so hopefully everything is going ok *touch wood*

Well I had a quick look at her today to see how she's going. He pointed out some areas where there has been and some where there is filler in the car. He reckons in her current state with the new work done etc she'll be good for another 5 years. It's really a case of we don't know how bad it really is until she's had a full strip etc. He's placed lots of rust killer in all the gaps he could find etc. Whatever the case, she's still a damn sight better then she was before I took her in! So until that time I'll enjoy her and cross that bridge if and when I get there. In five years my life is probably gonna look a lot different (i.e. kids!). Worst case, I let the car go (this I want to really avoid!), better case is that I get her an exemption licence, take her off the road and go for a crazy ground up resto. As above, figure it out when I get there. Don't wanna leave my crab bothers!.....I could always get a second one...... -Andrew
