Not me! It's still behaving. Anyway, odd query by a rather circuitous route, which I will try and outline as best I can.
At its simplest, the car will engage all gears with the engine off. With the engine running, it will not select any gears at all. The clutch is not seized and it's using a rod selector.
Further to: The gearbox has been rebuilt. The engine has been run removed from the vehicle, using an extended clutch pipe and the access panel for the idler gears has been removed. This shows that the idler gears stop when the clutch is depressed. The stabiliser bar for the rod selector has been cut and welded at some point, reason unknown.
I have suggested that they disconnect the selector completely and try selecting using grips or bar through the input shaft. No feed back on that yet.
So, over to you guys. All thoughts appreciated!

That is most peculiar. Do we know whether the reason for the gearbox being rebuilt and what was replaced? The welded stabiliser bar may hold some clue - is it a true Mk111 box or a modified Mk1/11 cable change? I agree with your suggestion of trying to operate the gearchange without using the selector. As they noted operating the clutch stops the idler gears it cannot be down to drag from the crankshaft spigot bush which would have been my first thought.

Further to: I am now advised that the car will select gears with the wheels off the ground and the engine running. Put the weight back on the ground and it won't select.

Did they rebuild the diff at the same time I wonder? It would be interesting to know whether the car can be pushed freely in neutral. Gets more confusing.

No basis in logic but why not leave it in 2nd when you switch it off when it's up in the air and once it's back on the deck start it up and go for a drive and see what happens!
Am trying to wrack my brains - remember reading something on here or in the magazine about some tolerances in the gearbox needed to be spot on when rebuilding....will have a look.

I think Andrew is spot on. If you look in the WM there is an array of different size shims required to set the correct clearances. I suspect they may not be available to the rebuilder. I had to use alternative methods to set the diff clearance on my box because of shim availability. It sounds like it might be a clearance issue. I wonder if it was set up using the WM.

Another couple of things, oil needs to be put in to the idler gear section after a rebuild see the WM. Sometimes forgotten! It may also be worth leaving the car to idle out of gear, to loosen up the clutch side and idlers. The balk rings have to line up the gears before it will let the gears mesh perhaps its all a little tight.

I am getting confused (easily done!) IF these symptoms are with the clutch depressed as first indicated and the idler gear cover is removed to confirm it is not turning with the gear selection in neutral, then I would suggest there must be clutch drag loading up the gearbox. It would be a good idea to remove the idler gear and check if the symptoms disappear and allow the input shaft to be turned manually to try and establish what is happening.
As Andrew and Nick point out the correct shimming is critical and the interface with the differential is critical. Some of the diff parts are shared with the MGB and readily available. As far as I can recall there is nothing novel about the gearbox components that were based on earlier Austin designs so should not be an issue for an experienced rebuilder.

Did you get to the bottom of this?
My MK1 is doing the same thing.
Mostly first to second, third to second and second to first.
A rebuild is coming with a different gearbox and new internal clutch components, but I’d like to be prepared.
