The house sounds like quite a project! Rather you than me Andrew! The sand blaster will hopefully be out soon. You will have to do the Honda in hot pink just for us. I want to see a track day video of you max speed in full leathers. That would definitely brighten up all out days! Nick Bought house in March and decided to do what I always wanted to do to car...take it back to shell, everything out (wiring, plumbing, doors, roof etc)and start again. I'm the unskilled labour and project manager - I can't say it's fun but it's satisfying some days and the parts are easy to get! Thinking of mini project and quite fancy the old Honda Express - if only for comedy value of 17 stone bloke on one! Keep up the good work! Cheers Andrew

Is it me, or is the mental image of Andrew in Hot Pink leathers somewhat disturbing? C.

It is indeed disturbing as I was only suggesting the Honda is hot pink not the leathers! That was in your minds eye and now ours too thanks.

If we're not careful we could get visits to the site from people searching for tractors (UK joke). David It is indeed disturbing as I was only suggesting the Honda is hot pink not the leathers! That was in your minds eye and now ours too thanks.

Yes indeed David Back to the car! I have come to the conclusion that I will be better off dropping the engine out and giving myself decent access to the engine bay. I have been avoiding this but again I am making work for myself by not doing so. I figure I already have the drive shafts, gear selector and exhaust disconnected. The rad is in the way for the current repair so would have to come out. I need to do some sand blasting so I am going to end up with sand all over the engine! I am going to try dropping it out the bottom so I can leave the rad carbs etc all on. I have plugs on most of the wiring. Also I have to replace the top engine mount so thats got to come off anyway. There we go talked myself into it! Nick

I never tried dropping it out from the bottom but always took it from the top with the radiator still attached. Removing the manifold is relatively easy and seemed preferable to moving the exhaust out of the way? I put it back without the radiator attached. Good luck!

Definitely the right decision and taking it out that way should be easy I reckon...I know as well as you do where this will lead though...might as well do the baulk rings...clutch, head skim/rebuild etc! And the additional shocks/mini upgrade is a useful and inexpensive mod. If you go that way I found the cheap mini shocks was the way to go - I swapped them for Konis and the stronger rebound was a bit too much. In the rally mods bit in the technical section there's lots of helpful tips on things you can seam weld and double skin whilst you've got access! On mine I did renew every last bit of the front suspension - even the bits that seemed fine and it made a massive difference to the driving experience. Have postponed Honda Express investment you'll all be relieved to learn.

Nope! Quite a bit of work there. I now have to do all the engine bay instead of what I could get to. Nick And did you like what you saw when it was out of the way?

Not a massive surprise and once it's done it's another thing you've sorted for good. I was paying for someone to do mine and it was in much worse condition than yours under the skin...so every new discovery was even more painful!! It only went in to have some rally spots fitted! Onward and upward. Cheers Andrew

It is going to save me time in the long run. Doing some work on the engine checking an old issue with the camshaft. Put a dial gauge on and number 2 exhaust valve is only moving 6.5 mm compared to no 1's 9mm. The cam is stuffed as I thought. I have a good cam so am attempting to fix it. I have it in bits but I can't get the cam out past the oil pump gear! The WM says late 18H engines it should come out. I think what the WM is saying is the gear moves up into a recess to allow the back bearing past. How! I really really really, did I say really don't want to pull the gearbox off! Ideas please! Nick

You do and I did but the oil pump shaft is still there and in the way. I think the later type should move up out of the way. Not happening! Given in and started pulling the gearbox off. Almost there just got to get the engine crane on it! Waste of an afternoon plus I will have to clean it and make new gaskets. Shall find out why it won't come out tomorrow hopefully. Nick I thought you had to pull the distributor drive shaft out? C.
