It looks like the noise in the video may have been from the loose carb David. Its not all that clear at the moment though because the engine is now running very badly, having been quite good up to this point!
Now the belts are back on one is squeeking when you rev the engine! I keep telling myself its a 45 year old car that sat in the garage for 20 years, what do you expect! So far staying sane, not so sure about poor dad though! New belts will need to go on I think. Old rubber again! Then we will see if the original noise has gone I suppose.
He found a bit of rubbish in one of the carb jets which must have dislodged from somewhere as they have already been cleaned. With any luck it will now run ok. Now also in the process of thread locking all the carb nuts and making plates to go behind the open air filters so they can be tightened a little better. They had also come loose.
I think the engine mount rubber is getting a bit old and hard, so the engine vibration is more harsh than before and at a bad frequency for making things work loose. I didnt have any trouble with the same setup in the old days that I remember!
Dad had the rocker box cover off and plenty of oil getting to the rockers which is good. He also confirmed putting oil in the transfer gear case.

It's good news if the noise is coming from the loose carb. I agree with the commentary on the video it did sound just like a bearing but the siamese inlet ports create odd air flow pulses that could create strange sounds if there is a leak.
You should be able to fit the better Oz engine mountings when it finally arrives which hopefully won't be tool long now. I think that an in-line fuel filter before the carbs is an essential bit of kit nowadays - and worth remembering the advice from Snoopy and Chris recently about fuel pipe degradation with modern fuel containing alcohol. I imagine your dad has now worked on your car for many many hours, what a nightmare to remove tiny probably insignificant amounts of stable asbestos while the country burns mega amounts of coal!

Your not wrong about the hours he has done for me. The Australian Border Force guys had a reasonable approach until some idiot decided to import kids crayons made in china that had asbestos in them as a binder! Then they got a bit upset about it as you can imagine! The rule was already in place at that point I believe. Its one of those things.
We certainly like coal yes indeed and with the re-elected PM that wont change any time soon!

Well it now seems I have a power steering leak as there was a small puddle under the car which was the last message from dad. Not sure if my noises are done with yet as no word of that, just more problems!
Mum now thinks the car is trying to tell me something!

Well it looks like I do have a suction side leak as the symptoms have not gone away! Any air from installation would be gone by now. My silly fault too. I decided to used the old strainer seal as it looked ok! Bad bad idea!!
I managed to finish a bit early today so I decided to do a bit of a test to see if my replacement seal was going to work.
I managed to get a large O-ring today from the local hydraulic company that was a similar size. I have a spare cover and strainer. The old seal looked ok so it decided to test it using the spare cover first.
With my compressor some gaffa tape and a tub of water I found the old seal was leaking like a sieve! I put the O-ring on instead and no leak! Called myself a few names at this point!
I also used a small O-ring and a new nylock nut with no washer, which was much more succesful than the fibre washer original effort!
So if you want to clean your strainer DO NOT use the old seal even if it looks good, its not worth the tears!
Now I have to give dad the good news!😭😭

That's good news a simple solution. Do you recall the size of the "O" ring to add to our knowledge base? It would be handy if new seals in good condition are hard to come by. David So if you want to clean your strainer DO NOT use the old seal even if it looks good, its not worth the tears! Now I have to give dad the good news!😭😭 Nick

I hope so Andrew! Thanks for posting your last video. It definitely helps with morale to see your car thundering round the track! Good idea David. I will let you know how it goes on the car when dad does it for me. The one I got locally and air tested was a Nitrile rubber one. I have ordered some Viton rubber metric ones online as Viton has a higher temp rating. Hopfully the nitrile one goes ok on the car when dad fits it for me. I have to make a new gasket for the cover before I can send it to him. The Nitrile O-Ring part number was 407-70D The size was 2-1/4 ID x 2-3/4 OD x 1/4 CS Mot booked for monday. Nick

Dad - saint more like! I well remember the days of one thing after another but when it comes to an end you sort of miss it. The only thing that goes regularly (every couple of years now) is a ball joint, but I think that's due to taking too much kerb too often at the track. It's as reliable as a modern now - probably better. Off to France in it mid week for a different kind of challenge - a 600 classic vehicle traffic jam that winds its way across Paris visiting all classic monuments and ending in a big picnic. About 450 cars and 150 assorted vintage tractors, mopeds/motorbikes etc. Be interesting challenge for cooling system as 30+ degrees forecast! Will post pictures on my return! Cheers Andrew

Cheers Andrew The Saint has come through! Mot passed with no advisories! Woohooo! Still got to fix the oil strainer issue but very happy. One more thing ticked off the list. He is 74 so you are right he is a Saint! There are several on here that could also be discribed as such for what they do for others! Im very glad he can do it for me and has the knowledge. I have all the gear and a hoist but can't help him so I find it hard! Look forward to seeing the photos Andrew sounds like fun. Hopefully I can put some of my own on eventually! Nick

Great news! I think it would be sensible to sort out the air strainer air leak next if you can persuade your dad to crawl under the car yet again! Then on to Glos and hopefully on it's way!
