Morning - looks great and you've not hung around with the build! Any initial impressions about how she gets down the road? Well done! Cheers Andrew

Car drives very well not like a 1970's car at all. Engine is quite standard only inlet manifold changed, exhaust and ignition and a little head work. Car has a very usable 102hp. Only down side is noise made by winter tyres and 6inch rims. But needed for snow and ice. Car handles very well, addition of front shocks made a big difference. If I had more time would add power steering.
Building a new engine for the future, 1950cc, with a very mild cam (Crane USA) and roller rockers, big valve head, Will add fuel injection using 2" SU as a throttle body so it looks original, with megasquirt ECU controlling fuel and ignition. Should then have a conservative 130bhp and a very high torque engine.

Morning - and Happy Christmas - like the sound of the big engine but it'd be nice to have a five speed box to go with it! I have to agree that front shocks are brilliant at improving the handling and am sure take the worst jolts off the displacers and were one of the first things they did to the works cars. Feel that some Landcrabs should come and cheer you on as you make your way to the channel at the end of Jan - any idea of the route yet? Cheers Andrew

Thanks for posting and good luck from all of us here. I would be interested when you decide to fit the megasquirt ECU as I am working on a system to provide separate ignition timing for cylinder pairs 1,4 and 2,3 to see if can even out the power to compensate for the siamese port charge robbing. The clearance of the fan to the crankshaft harmonic balancer (pulley) seems quite tight for the trigger wheels I've seen.

Easier to use a scatter pattern cam to even out the pulses, they have been used on A series and B series engines in rally and race form to a while. Not sure if they are available for road cams. Mega squirt is very easy to work with, I have a TVR mega squirt equipped, so easy to tune, MOT is fun, sit with laptop in car till it passed emissions, car could never run with that fueling on the road totally terrible, after MOT put it back to original settings.
I wondered about the Maxi 5 speed gearbox, never seen one, would it fit? Gearbox is one thing that lets the car down, ratios and gear change.

I agree that a scatter cam is a better solution, but if just moving to a programmed ignition triggered from the crank pulley or flywheel avoiding the jitter and errors in the distributor drive chain for a normal road car then it isn't too difficult to try out the 1,4 -2,3 separation to see what can be achieved. I'm not aware if there is a suitable scatter cam for the B series for general road use as I believe its benefits are more towards the top of the rev range?
Fascinating using the laptop to set the emissions for the MOT and then having to revert to make the car responsive again. I think it would be impossible for a crab to meet current requirements and still run at all. I believe Harley Davidson got fined for cheating when they couldn't meet the new emission standards and maintain performance so they sold a kit that brought back the performance but....
The Maxi gearchange was dreadful compared with the 1800 in my opinion although the gearbox does have the advantage of 5 gears and higher gearing that allows for less fraught cruising in the 80s. I've not heard of anyone trying to graft a Maxi gearbox onto a crab engine and imagine it would be very difficult given the Maxi E series engine is a very different design from the B.

I see your entry is the only car with a team of three and that most entries will start from Glasgow.

Yes that's correct, my friend always wanted to do the Monte, he is in his 70,s never done a motor sport event before. Myself and other friend Eddie have raced anything that has moved since we were kids. Attached is a tongue in cheek article our local paper printed, a retired journalist friend wrote and researched article for news paper. There are several other entry locations in each country. Athens, Bad Homburg, Glasgow, Reims, Milan, Monte Carlo, Barcelona etc. All the UK cars stop at a classic car event in Banbury on Janurary 31st run by the local council, before heading off to Calais.

An amusing article just don't take Richard Hammond along with you after all those comments about the Stig, and if you do don't let him drive!
