Both of my cars have roof insulation, although I recall it being a felt material. Chris. Ah ok thanks Chris. The stuff in the Oz crab is just like the bonnet insulation about 1" thick with a vinyl covering glued to it. It feels quite solid when it is in good condition. Do you think your cars have insulation like that or is it just a thick head lining? I seem to recall my six being like a felt yes but it had a sun roof. I dont think it was like the Oz cars. Im a bit sketchy on that though as it was a while ago. The Mk3 is just a loose Vinyl Im sure. If you push it up from memory you can feel the metal roof. Nick

Well I have to say I am sick of making gaskets. There are I think 26 in the engine that you must assume are asbestos (Twin Carbs Included). Although there were several of these that I found different types in the gasket sets I have. An example would be the diff cover upper and lower gaskets. If the gasket is grey in colour then it does not contain ACM. I also have a set that are red which do contain ACM. It would appear though that the grey is more common and safe. This is a similar material to the grey gasket that goes between the gearbox and Crankcase. This also tested negative to asbestos. I will be testing the OEM cork material used on the front and rear main bearing caps. From a visual check they appear to be OK so this is a waste of effort really. I am only testing them because I must be 100% sure because of where they are.
I have an OZ gearbox/diff apart at the moment to have a play with the diff bearing preload. This is because I will need to remove the OEM diff gaskets from the UK car and maintain the correct preload. It says in the WM that this must be set with shims. I have pulled covers off several gearboxes and none had shims. I assume by this that they are machined to close tolerances. The alternative is that the preload is not that important which I doubt! My biggest issue with this is I cant use OEM gaskets as they contain asbestos. Its not that easy to get gasket material that is exactly the same thickness and compresses by the same amount as the OEM's! David has given me a helpful contact who I have yet to talk to, so I should be able to work something out. It would be nice to get some shims but they are a little rare it seems!
Over and above this I am thinking of putting an Auto diff into my OZ manual crab as it currently has the alternative ratio of 4.187:1 and also one of the inner bearings is damaged. It would be nice to get the revs down a bit on the highway. I think from a visual inspection this will work. The only hurdle will be the pinion fit. I will let you know how I go in due course. Not that Auto diffs are easy to come by if anyone else wanted to try it!! I think I have the speedo drive from the auto as well somewhere but am not sure if this will help with the conversion!
I may have a go at changing the gearbox to a rod change but the selectors are visibly different and I only have the rod assemble not the selectors so this may not be possible with a simple mod!!
If anyone has tried setting diff preload I am interested in the process!
