Hi I am looking for help particularly from Mk3 Austin 1800 owners but any Mk3's would help. My Austin 1800 Mk3 is missing its engine number. Not usually much of a problem, and up to now it has not been a problem for me. After 20 years of my car sitting in dads garage in the UK and me living in Australia it is now time according to Dad that the car gets shipped or scrapped! Well I can't scrap the old girl so shipping it is! Having done a bit of research into shipping, I found I will need to prove the particulars of the car and engine when it arrives in Aus! Oh well should be on the V5 I say to myself! Now the good old DVLA have not listed the full number! Ok so I could have a stab at the number but how hard could it be to work it out. I decided I don't really want to guess? Well it is quite hard to work it out as it turns out and be fairly sure of it, as there are a good number of choices. So far I have narrowed it down a fair bit but would love to get a few examples from you guys if possible please! The number I am after is the second prefix. If the number is 18H- 351E H10000 the 351E is the second prefix and the bit I am after! Please include details about your car like year, Austin/Morris/Wolseley, Manual/Auto, Power steering if you can help me. If you are interested in where I am up to with the prefixes look HEREThanks Nick

Hello again
I can see I am going to have to appeal to the wider audience for help! Anyone who knows a Mk3 Austin owner please can you sneak a peak at their engine number, with permission of course! I just need the 2nd prefix as I mentioned and a couple of details of the car pretty please. No Identifiable info is required. Incase you don't know, you can tell its a Mk3 Austin because the rear badge dosen't say mk1 or mk2 just "AUSTIN1800". The earliest mk3 I have seen is L reg but don't quote me on that!
Thanks
Nick

Couple of photos from the official launch on 21st March 1972 on the 1800 dynamo was still standard, alternator an option, PAS an option (but bizarrely you could not have both alternator and PAS, it was one or the other). Other options were automatic gearbox, heated rear window and reclining front seats.

I think the alternator or PAS option was because the PAS was driven off the back of the dynamo and an extended alternator wasn't available at the time. The cars were negative earth from 1973 (no month) according to my BL w/s data and recollection and had the SU carb with the bias needle and crankcase breather feed, ie no PCV. It looks as though there were some Mk2.5 hybrids just as in 1968 there were Mk1.5 cars.
Hope you get an answer soon to yur engine number question.
regards
David

the Mk3 press launch pack claims the 1800 was negative earth from launch but that engine bay shot does certainly show it's positive earth!
No "negative earth" warning sticker on the slam panel either. So Mk2.5 it is!
The alternator option is shown as a 16ACR which would be negative earth.
Must have been fun on the assembly line!

Also just noticed the position of the top radiator hose is same as Mk2 and there is no PAS bracket cast into the thermostat housing which the later Mk3s have.

Thanks for the pictures it is quite interesting to see the lack of bracket on the thermostat housing on a K reg car. Also dynamo and control box etc on a supposed mk3 nay mk2.5 First thing I looked for was the engine number plate!! Strategically placed plug lead covering it up! Damn! I think I have seen pas on the back of alternator somewhere! Maybe they optioned it eventually. I got around it on my car then I fitted a pas rack from a mk2 with a triumph pump above the altenator. I originally used the cast stat cover bracket and then when that broke a plate sandwiched between the cover and head with tube for fixing welded on. Still fitted today. Nick

Sounds like you are doing a bit of work on the car. We are always interested in restorations! I am guessing the car is a Morris, as the previous owner was from Morris motors. Can you confirm this please. Also according to the 651E it should be a manual with rod gear change, no PAS, carb crancase ventilation and a pre-engaged starter? Look forward to hearing more about your car. Regards Nick

Long time no reply as a lot of personal stuff going on as well as rebuilding a 1954 Matchless G3LS. Body has been completely stripped down to last nut and bolt. Made a dolly for the body and trailered it to local soda blaster. £1000 later, body soda blasted and primed. Can’t do my own body repairs as remote garage with no power! Trailered to local one man body shop whilst I have rebuilt engine as best as I can. Peter Burgess fast road head conversion , so all sitting on engine hoist awaiting body. When I can find out how to post photos will show you some of the horrors as the body comes together.

Hopefully(if I have done it correctly) photo of Muddy after garage opened after car sat there since early 1980s. Cylinder head after Peter Burgess did his work. Goodness knows what the larger inlet valves will do to the breathing, so I expect some fun times ahead. Will post some photos of the bodywork progress if I have managed to master posting photos.
