Morning all.
My beloved Carlton Grey 3-Litre GAN21J had a bit of an accident whilst driving on the M6 yesterday. There was a loud "clonk" and then a strange metallic "zuzzing" noise. On pulling over to the side of the road it was apparent that the levelling pump had had a bit of an internal episode and the pulley (stripped of its keyway) was lying in the front crossmember. No sign of the belt though. Probably lying somewhere on the M6 near the Solihull exit.
So, with this in mind, I was wondering whether anyone knew of the whereabouts of a second hand levelling pump (doesn't need to be working) and / or pulley so I can get the old girl working again please. I'm very happy to pay a good price if it will help. :-)
Thanks all.
Kind regards.

Hi all. The 3-Litres originally had a vacuum take-off connection to the rear carburetter (Which looked exactly like Chris's diagram above) but this was moved to the centre of the inlet manifold because it was found that the cars were overheating at idle. GAN21J has had this modification as the original nipple has been closed off and what I assume may well once have been a nipple has been installed in the inlet manifold but then for some reason removed and replaced with a screw (or whatever ot is). I spoke to a pal of mine in Exmouth who makes miniature steam-engines and he said it should be a simple job to drill out and install a new nipple in the manifold. Thanks everyone for the ideas though. (Especially Chris for the pictures etc.) Kind regards. From Mike.

Evening everyone.
After having fitted the newly overhauled 25D6 from The Distributor Doctor (who I can highly recommend BTW) on my 3-Litre, I wanted to get the ignition set up just right. When I went to check the vacuum advance however, it turned out that the metal pipe connecting the distributor to the manifold was not connected to anything! It had its little 90 degree rubbery bit on it but it was just sat on top of the manifold where underneath used to be the nipple for the vacuum take-off. What has replaced the nipple I know not - It just looks like a snapped-off (flush) self-tapper or something like that. I will try drilling it out when the time comes but I have nothing to replace it with and I was wondering whether anyone had any thoughts on what this piece might be called or where I might start to look. (I suppose I could ask The Distributor Doctor chap, but I thought I'd have a bit of a search around on the Interweb first.)
Thanks all.
Kind regards.
From Mike.

Hi all. I spotted this whilst looking for some doors for my 3-Litre. These are brand new 1800 near side back doors. (They are painted in some kind of army-green). I think the part number indicates that they are early ones but the later ones (Maxi etc.) are further down the page somewhere. Unfortunately no off-side ones though. The postage (although not mentioned on the site) is 30 pounds... www.buyexmilitarysurplus.co.uk/search.php?search_query=austin+1800&x=0&y=0Thanks all. Kind regards. From Mike.

Hi Chris and Tripplescrew.
Many thanks for the replies. I've spoken to Neil (Kidby) from the 3-Litre Owners Club and he says that the Maxi doors can be converted but it's not a terribly easy job, involving cutting out the inner centre section of the 3-Litre doors and welding it into the Maxi doors. If it really comes to it and I can't get any 3-Litre doors for reskinning then I may have to resort to that.
Thanks Chris and Tripplescrew.
Kind regards.

Hi all.
I've not posted here for a long time (since my poor old Blue Royale 3-Litre got used and abused heavily and driven into an early grave) and I hope it's okay to post a "wanted" in this section. (Mods please move or delete if not.)
I'm trying to get my "new" 3-Litre sorted out for the summer (this one won't be abused quite as much as the previous old girl) but the doors, which were a bit rusty to start with, were entrusted to a "repairer" who has severely buggered them about and now they really need replacing. :-(
I've managed to find a brand new rear N/S door but I was wondering whether anyone knew of some 3-Litre front doors - even ropey ones that could be reskinned would be okay.
I'm happy to pay a good price and collect from most places. :-)
Many thanks everyone - I'll report back on the restoration.
Kind regards.
From Mike.

Thanks Alexander and Chris. I'm pleased that it's now gone to Neil, especially as I will definitely see the old girl again and perhaps even own her one day again. Having said that, I'm quite sure that MisterSocks and the other potential owners would have sorted her out equally well. Kind regards. From Mike.

Well, the old girl is finally gone. A bit of a sorry story but it has a happy ending... After several people phoned, emailed or PM'd me about the car, I had a terrible sinking feeling about getting rid of the old girl (she had after all been with me for more than a 3rd of my life) and it was like sending a family member off never to be seen again. In the end, after messing everyone about terribly (especially MisterSocks of this forum - I'm really sorry Rich) I decided to donate it to its previous owner (Neil Kidby, who used to run the owners' club) who said he would restore it to new condition again (like he did the first time around) but would give me first refusal if he ever sold it. So Neil got it back in the end (he said he'd always regretted selling it) and I might be able to get the old girl back in the future whenever Neil sells it. Thanks everyone, and my apologies to Rich again for messing you around - I'm really not normally like that. From Mike.

Hey all.
Since I've decided not to carry on with my poor old blue-royale Austin 3-Litre (due to a new 3-Litre having been purchased), I thought I ought to put it up for sale as a restoration project.
The car is pretty solid although it does need welding between the floor and the "uprights" inside the cabin, also a few bits and bobs on the floor at the back and the bottoms of the rear wheel arches. The rear skirt could do with sorting out too. One of the hydrolastic pipes has burst and needs replacing. The downpipe from the manifold to the rest of the exhaust is broken so the exhaust is pretty raucous.
All the seats and carpets have been removed (last week) so that the welding can be sorted. (Before I decided not to continue with it.)
The 4 doors are immaculate (although one hasn't been primered and has some light surface rust). The driver's side wing was a brand new old stock one and the passenger side wing was a good second-hand wing. The carpets (and extra floor-mats) were bought new from Coverdale carpets and were the top ones available. The car comes with a set of brand new outer sills (both sides) and a pair of Maxi wheel-arch repair kits (no use on their own for the 3 Litre, but can be cut to get the curved section between the bottom of the wheel arch and the end of the sill). The car also has a period Webasto sun roof which is fantastic for long journeys in the summer. The car also comes with all manner of spare odds-and-ends like a spare dashboard and a spare wiring-loom, 500 hub-caps (or so it seems) and various electrical fittings etc. The engine has just under 100,000 miles on the clock and purrs like a cat. The automatic gearbox is fine and works very well.
I guess I'd like 300 quid for the old girl and it can be collected from Exmouth whenever is convenient. (I work in Solihull but I can arrange for somebody to come down from North Devon to open the garage.) The car will be in North Devon (Dowland) until Saturday the 14th of April.
Although the old girl looks in a bit of a sorry state at the moment, it wouldn't take a huge amount of work to get her back on the road again. The main bits are the welding, the hydrolastic pipe and putting the interior back together again.
Thanks all.
Kind regards.
From Mike.

Thanks Alexander. The Wolseley was mostly completed as far as the bodywork was concerned but the chap that bought it still needed to do quite a lot of work to get the engine and gearbox installed again and the interior etc. back to rights. It looks as though he's done a cracking job.
As for the 3-Litre, I yesterday bought another low-mileage one which is in un-molested and un-welded condition so I think my poor old 3-Litre will be sold cheaply as a restoration project. Some welding is needed especially in the inner-sills and where the floor meets the uprights inside - it also needs a new exhaust, a hydrolastic pipe and probably a rear valance, but all the rest of the parts are there to make it as good as new again. The doors are immaculate, the drivers wing was a brand-new old-stock one and the passenger wing was a very-good S/H one. Anyway, perhaps I ought to start a new thread for this.
I agree though, your LHD and my RHD would make a good team. I think yours is Blue Royale too(?), but in the photographs it sometimes looks grey so I could be mistaken. I was told that there were two versions of Blue-Royale too, but I don't know which version mine is.
Thanks Alexander.
Kind regards.
From Mike. PS. That gear-lock thing looks excellent - very period-looking too.

Thanks for the welcome Keef and Andrew. I do have a hideous picture of me from 22 years ago standing in between my 2 Wolseley's looking every bit like Alan Partridge in my "Should have gone to Specsavers" glasses. It was a very low-res picture taken on a really early digital camera but I'll see if I can dig it out. One of the Wolseleys (the automatic one) was Harvest Gold and had the reg ATA188L (It's still on the road now although it's now in some nice BL white colour) but the other one (M-reg) was bought by a boy racer in Exmouth and then thrashed and dumped on the A30 in a layby near Honiton before being carted away and scrapped. (I assume it had broken down.)

Well, here are the pictures of the poor old thing being transferred to North Devon last week. It's a pretty big file so it may take some time to download. www.oldtechnology.net/misc/3LitreTransfer.zipAs stated previously, it's not for the squeamish. (And you can't even see the worst of the problems...) How did I ever let her get into this condition? From Mike.
