Hey guys,
As most of you know, the Rover 623 decided it didn't want to work anymore and I thought I might pick your brains about it.
She's currently at the mechanics and this is the story so far:
-Running rough \ on three cylinders
-Oil getting into the water (and likely vice-versa)
-Clouds of white smoke coming from the exhaust
Now those signs you'd assume a head gasket failure, but:
-The head gasket is fine (the head has been taken off)
-Awaiting results on a pressure test on the head, but no obvious cracks on it
-There is a lot of gunk in the exhaust manifold (which you'd expect given the smoke)
It has the mechanic stumped at this point. Myself and my FIL are scratching our heads too.
Could it be that there was a failure between two galleries in the block?
Perhaps a crack within the head (between the valves)?
At this stage it seems like anything is possible lol

It does sound as though there may be a crack in the head. A "Google" search does come up with a few examples for this engine, but there again I think it would do on any vehicle. The crack, if there is one may not be visible and could open under heat. good luck, keep us informed.

Yeah, both my FIL and I believe it's gotta be the head somehow, was a failure in the block is simply hard to imagine (but not impossible). Hoping we'll get a result back today from a pressure test on the head.
If it is the head, then I'll try and source one, as the car would be worth it then, but if not, then I'm afraid we'll have to call it a day and look for another car.

Update.
Got the results last week regarding the head, it's poked. Crack all the way through it apparently.
Can't find any heads in the country too! Keeping my eyes open, but it looks like it's all over Rover. Bloody gutted to be honest, she was going nicely as well!
I could try my luck with the UK, but the shipping would be awful. And that's assuming the block face is ok (would need to get that checked before I order a head).

That's a shame. R600s are almost worthless here which would mean that a replacement head wouldn't be too expensive but with a lump like that the airfreight will be scary or if using a boat your car will be off the road for too long. They were sold in Singapore in the their day but have probably all gone by now due to their car permit system. Anything in Japan - Honda engine and all that?

How much does the head weigh when stripped down. Parcel Force charge around £200 for 4-6 day delivery based on 20kg and guessing at the size. There may be cheaper shippers. I guess the real problem is ensuring that the replacement head is sound as it looks as though head cracking is not that unusual. Nothing available in Australia?

Well yeah that's the other risk, that the head I use to replace it (as it's likely to be second hand) might give up the ghost itself.
By the time I've got a new head and put it all back together, it'll likely be around $1500 NZD, if I'm lucky. I think it'll make more sense to put the money towards a new vehicle (we're keen on a station wagon for the kids stuff etc).
I think she's had her day sadly, I'll put the registration on hold and flick her off. I'll gift the full tank of gas that's in her to my father in law lol.

By coincidence to this thread I had a meeting at British Car Auctions today. A few cars have been dumped there as the scrap price for steel has gone right down and old vehicles are being abandoned again. Guess what was there today. Yeah, an R600. I was tempted to ask where it was going to see if I could have the head but it was a 1.8 or 2.0 so no use.

Righto, bought a replacement vehicle, 2006 Ford Focus.
As for the Rover, my father in law has offered to take it off my hands, as he's keen to get it fixed and have it for his mrs to drive. Life is funny lol.
Now what are the odds the Rover outlives the Focus!

Nice to hear that it might live again. Is an NZ Focus a vehicle we might recognoe up here? I know the US one is different.

The Ford Focus will be of the European type, with the 2.0 Duratec engine. I think they're made in Germany or Belgium.
Yeah, FIL seems keen to fix the Rover, so touch wood it works out well for him.
