Hi All, I got the Mk2 out for its first drive in God knows how many years. On a permit to take it to be inspected and get number plates. It didn't quite go as expected - though it could have been worse (didn't leak stuff all over the place or have brakes fail.) "Keep Calm & Carry On", was my motto - when I broke down, stuck in the middle of the main north-south road blocking traffic and getting dirty looks. Just after the breakdown services lady said she'd called the police to divert traffic, I got it started again and went on. The problem was the brakes had been jamming on after sitting with my foot on the pedal. After things cooling down, they released. I got the brakes sorted but: - When the engine is hot, it is very hard to start - cranks ok.
- The initial acceleration is embarrassingly slow - kind of walking pace on any incline, and
- The judder and rattle through the front end to the steering wheel is scary. Ride height is correct and even.
Definitely NOT floats on fluid, but an adventure - make me feel young again, like a student Paddy

I would start with a big service. That may cure a multitude of things and the car will need it anyway if it's been sat. Plugs Leads Points Rotor arm Condenser Oil Oil filter Air filter Check the tie bars.
If it's been sat for a long time the judder whilst driving could be flat spots on the tires. Again they should probably be changed as they will be out of date.

Second that! Would probably add check for crappy fuel or put cheap in line fuel filter in and see what it catches and make sure distributor advance mechanism is working ok. Scary judder sounds like you've developed Fred Flintstone tyres it doesn't need much for them to feel horrendous. Cheers Andrew

It's either very lean on the fuel (possible) or the timing is a long way out (much more likely). "Won't pull the skin off a rice puddding" is usually retarded and will send the temperature soaring. Also bad starting - too far advanced and it often won't actually turn over.
Chris.

Thanks Chris, I'll have a look at that too.
Nice turn of phrase, reminds me of St Augustine's school dinners.

After checking the timing, maming sure the brakes don't bind and changing the fuel as suggested, I would take off the carb, clean it thoroughly and make sure the float valve is working properly, the fuel feed to the jet is clear and the pison isn't sticking. Carb cleaner, nothing abrasive.
good luck
David

Oh, and I found a leak in the exhaust - near the manifold - which can't be doing anything any good. Hopefully I can get that sorted on Sat.

They all do that, Sir.... Front support bracket proved to have a bolt missing, so that was replaced. Manifold to pipe joint is a well known pain in the behind. There are four components plus the nuts and bolts to be arranged around the joint and it can take for ever. I had a minor epiphany and tack welded the bolts to one of the outer clamp halves. Assembly then literally took 5 minutes. I suspect that it could even be done one-handed. Chris.
